Just wondered if anyone knew what starters are interchangeable on the gl1200s?
I have an 86 1200 in my 1000, but the 84 starters housing is quite a bit smaller, and the 86 (fuel injected if it makes any difference) is getting in the way
the 84 bolt pattern seems to be different than the 86

Cyborg is correct. The 84 is unique and the rest are interchangeable. 84's are harder to find.

It's amazing what cleaning and new brushes will do if done in time.

Re: gl1200 starter compatability 84-87
I have 3 84 starters..., i wanted to use one on the 86 because they are much smaller
but the 86 starter housing is massive
My gl1000 engine/frame brace was rotted, so i took a gl1100 side brace, and welded the gl1000 rear tab on it.. but the housing on the 86 is so big its interfering for some reason, so much that the starter is actually sitting on the frame brace tabs
unless the gl1100 side brace is different other than the rear end tab?
but my dad had done this to a gl1000 and had no problems, even though im trying to mount a 1200 in it, but the engine mounts on all 3 engines were same....

The side braces are all slightly different. From Sunnbobb
