Starter motor drags
Still works but now and then i get the chug..pause..chug..pause...then rolls over and starts the bike. Other times it will, operate like its still new. I have already checked the cables at the starter and the selinoid and all is good there.
What say the masses..full on rebuild kit or just get new brushes and springs?? Clean the armature with some emory cloth and something like brake cleaner or carb spray to rinse the grit out, new grease in the bushings, new springs and brushes, new oring on the end??? Sound about right??

Re: Starter motor drags
I get this occasionally (no reply) from the masses with a straight forward question also!... Im not fully up with the internals of the starter mechanism of a Wing but from what ive read and experienced the starter will "drag' because there is a clutch in there some where within the sprockets..
I have found it to occasionally (twice) "drag" and make strange noises then all of a sudden will "connect" and spin away as normal.. Though this was in the initial stages of getting my #1 Wing sorted, and yes it had electrical issues with battery, soleiniod, and other things....
Once the electrical issues were sorted, not to mention tuning, and the battery was "FULLY CHARGED", not 98% charged, but fully charged and all other issues were sorted it hasnt "dragged" since... Im not sure why and at the times it dragged the Temp was low for here (10-15c)..
Having said all the above, and the starter "drags occasionally".... IMO i reckon its normal and hold off on the rebuild for a while.... Hopefully someone else will contribute their experience's with starter drag..

Don't know where all the smart people are ...... I've been on the road again ..... your plan for cleaning sounds like a good start ..... use a toothpick to clean the grooves in the armature and aluminum foil to polish it .....

Re: Starter motor drags
Man, some people would think this post has been on for days with no reply. It's been less than 9 hours.
To your question. You say you checked the cables at the starter and solenoid. What about the ground cable? Both ends should be taken off and cleaned. This is the cheap easy stuff first. You may have to remove the starter and clean it. The starter clutch I don't believe has anything to do with your issue. There are starter rebuild kits available on ebay. You may not need one though. Remove the starter and clean it first. After checking the ground cable and battery condition.

Re: Starter motor drags
Cables and connections first as stated and then the internal cleaning of the commutator end also pay close attention to the brush mounting plate. it has a couple bent tabs that make the connection to the body/cap for the grounded brush and these get dirty/less effective at making the ground between the body and end cap. there are some good write-ups on starter repair. The little tabs can be cleaned and re-bent a little bit to improve the connection. this is critical to the operation of the starter. Fixed the one on my 84 and never returned.

Re: Starter motor drags
Sounds like the first step is to remove and open it and do some brush dust removal. Wont be today though. Anyone have a certain rebuild kit they have used and could recommend should it be needed????

Re: Starter motor drags
Mine did not need any parts but I picked up a set of brushes from Mother Honda and replace them while I was in there for good measure but your's may be good also. The manual gives a minimum length. Watch for the thin shim/thrust washers on both ends of the armature shaft they tend go for a walk when you are not looking. their are usually several on each end.

Re: Starter motor drags
What about the armature bushings? How do they tend to hold up? This is part of my concerns if I am gonna spend some cash here.....get just springs and brushes or go full bore and get a kit that has bushings and all that jazz. Undecided really and once i take it off I just want to rebuild it and get it back on without waiting 2 weeks for parts to show up again.

Re: Starter motor drags
Never seen a bad bearing in one of the GL starters but I guess it could happen.
Before I went through the trouble of removing it and cleaning I'd have a set of brushes on hand. As others have pointed out above probably just needs cleaning. The usual symptom is it spins fine when cold but once hot it drags. That is the usually complaint and usually a cleaning, bend the tabs and replace the brushes fixes it.
As for a rebuild kit? I don't know of any.. Bushings and brushes are all that wears out and I've never seen worn out bushings. Upon re-assembly I like to use light machine oil on the bushings or a very thin smear of high temp lithium grease. Can't stress this enough. There are shim washers in there on both ends of the armature. Make sure when you take it apart you keep those in the same alignment and on the same side as when you took it apart.
Oh.. PB blaster is your friend on all of the bolts especially that back header nut. And take it from me don't even try this without removing the shift lever. Easy to do and you will thank me for that tip.

Re: Starter motor drags
One more very important thing is to use a thin 10mm wrench to hold the inner nut when removing the outer nut. Holding the cable will likely not be safe enough and if the stud turns in the insulated bushing it will come undone from the field windings and a trip to your rebuilders will be needed to fix it correctly. I cant stress this enough. It happens quickly and easily and does not take much of a twist to break it. Reinstall it the same way. I had to grind an old wrench to get it thin enough.

Robin..I have seen these kits and noticed there are the full kits with all the fixings and just the brushes and springs..thus, since i havent rebuilt a starter yet, I was confused on what I really needed to get the motor good again. Mostly acts up when hot engine.

My 79 with 33K had a bad bearing in it, it was the one nearest to the planet gears. My local rebuilder put a new one in and did the brushes. $60.
