Uh Oh! Now What?

Post by Track T 2411 »

I've had an issue with a pesky oil leak on the bottom of the trans cover on Quickie since I got her. Last fall, while I was cleaning the years of caked on gunk, I discovered that the lower center bolt on the cover had been replaced with a Phillips head bolt, and was covered with wonderful silicone goop, as well. When I tried to remove it, it became readily apparent that the threads were stripped. Great, I thought, and filed the info away for later.

Fast forward to today, when I decided it was time to pull the cover, and get on with the thread repair. Ugh!

That nice dark line at 10 O'clock? that be a crack...

The dark layer of stuff on the top of the hole is some type of repair...

View from the bottom. The thin jagged line just to the left and following closely around the bulge of the casting is, you guessed it, a crack.

The scrape along the bottom of the casting suggests that the bottom front end of the engine hit something very hard, putting vertical stress on the front of the bolt, breaking out the casting upward in the front, and downward in the back. Or not. lolol

I'd weld the crack and timeSert the hole

Is it your conclusion that he "pesky leak" was from the crack or the stripped bolt... maybe just the TimeSert?? Once you've got the set, there's not muich risk in just giving it a try to see if the quiet pressure of a good bolt fixes the leak. But if you worry that the break is sufficient to be put at risk by the pull, then it's best to weld before completing the break

Yes, you will need to get somebody who can TIG weld the cracks, and then you can drill and timesert the hole. I would start with local machine shops that cater towards building engines.

Not having the capacity to weld the area,I would clean the area thoroughly,JB weld it including the hole.Redrill and rethread the hole and keep the torgue on that screw down to nice and snug.

I agree with hmratbam, however, if you are going to have a welder down there, I would weld the hole up as well and tap a new screw hole.

you guys are overthinking it.
There is no oil pressure there
It split B/C crossthreading the bolt.
clean it thoroughly with carbspray (including the bolt) and butter it all up with a little JB weld, then assemble normally B4 the stuff dries.

I had a similar experience once, but mine was cracked a little worse. JB didn't work, even though I gave it plenty
of time to cure. I'm only guessing the aluminum and JB expand and contract differently. A local welder did a nice
job welding it and it's been fine for some years now. JB might work, might not. If you only want to do it once,
I'd take it to a welder.

blame the oil leak on them
lolol

If the engine is out of the bike, you can torch or arc weld the outside crack for about $1 of aluminum rod; but I'm not good enough to do anything with aluminum unless it's flat. Tig is lovely and needed for structural joining, but this has held with no welding for ?, so any moderately good gob of melted aluminum should make it TimeSert ready.

I'm revisiting this thread, as the kid will hopefully be putting this engine back into service this summer. He's found a local welder friend who (from the pics) can fix it. I will need to remove the shifter mechanism, etc. to gain clearance. Had anyone messed with this before? Any tips or must do's?

Here's a better picture of the inside of the crack. Whatever was used to seal it flaked right off. The crack itself, and the bolt hole are full of crud yet, but at least we can see what we're dealing with. Next step is to clean up the rest of the engine, then seal it up enough to take it to get repaired.
