Having issues trying to rebuild "83" 1100 rear air shocks

#1

Post by quadrunner »

I'm in the process of rebuilding my rear shocks including replacing the oil seal and using progressive springs.
I've taken out the oil seal and the other components. I've made the jig to compress the springs that I've found on this site. The problem I'm having is when trying to compress the springs, the top part of the shock mount isn't seperating from the chrome cover.

One thought I had is to mount another bracket above the top of shock and secure it to the 3/8 rods and then tie rap through the shock bolt hole and then try and compress the springs again, but before I do this I wanted to reach out to you guys and see if you can offer any advise.

Regards,

I see where it un screws in the pictures, the problem I'm having is when compressing the spring the top shock mount isn't seperating or staying in the up posistion, it's moving down along with the chrome cover.

Thanks for the link, great pictures.

I compressed the springs a little further per your advise & wo la it worked!
I think that when I put in the new springs in , I'm going to use 1/2 threaded rod as opposed to 3/8, as the 3/8 bent some under the pressure.
