gl1000 starter rebuild
Working on rebuilding my starter. Took it apart today and everything looks pretty worn. The brushes are definitely worn below the 5mm limit, and one is worn way lower than the other. I also noticed the armature not longer has ridges on one side and they are mostly worm through on the other. Question is, do I just need new brushes or is the armature being worn down cause for a new starter? Not gonna waste my time cleaning this one if it's worthless.

Re: gl1000 starter rebuild
Once you clean it up so you can see the gaps and see how deep they are..then you'll know but it looks worn out but hard to tell from pics..I may have a good armature..if you end up needing one I'd have to check it out with a meter to be sure it's still good.

Re: gl1000 starter rebuild
Might want to bring it to a good alternator/starter shop and have them do an autopsy/checkup on it. My starter guy isn't cheap but he is always under replacement cost and he does stand behind his work.

Re: gl1000 starter rebuild
Oops I said ARMATURE when I meant to say COMMUTATOR. And yeah it isn't just caked in dirt the metal is worn down smooth. RB I will have to message you pending response to my next question.
So I can get it refurbished if the metal has worn down? Like they would just cut new grooves into it if they could? Thanks.oldwings 78 wrote:Might want to bring it to a good alternator/starter shop and have them do an autopsy/checkup on it.
