Lube for driveshaft/final drive splines.

#1

Post by delling3 »

Need some info on this. I know that the final drive splines should be lubed using a good molybdenum disulfide grease (I have ordered some Guard Dog 525). My question is what about the splines on the drive shaft? The rear drive shaft spline has a zerk fitting allowing grease to be added, but the forward seems more problematic.

Thanks in advance.

My Honda shop manual says they get lubed. And yes they are a pain if done right. Last time I did mine was during a tire change. To me that boot is a pain. It's recommended to check and or re lube at every tire change.

Yes to the above.

I don't believe in the zerk. It was an attempt by Honda to cure a design flaw. With each tire change I clean out all the old grease and re-grease both the coupler and the splines using only Honda Moly 60. Do a search and you'll find many threads on this topic along with 'how-to's'.

Guard dog is excellent. Recent trend seems to prefer it over moly 60. I actually use just the moly paste from my local auto store. Neither Moly 60 or Guard dog are mentioned in any manual, just make sure its molybdenum disulfide grease and your good.

The area that is fed by the zerk fitting I have found is easiest to get at by taking the pumpkin off.

The zerk fitting was added, I guess late 75 early 76 after Honda dealer ships started to have GW'S brought in by customers with dry rear couplings. They put out a service bulletin and sent upgrade kits to us, Grease seals and zerk fittings to put in our customers bikes.
My 75's don't have the zerks and soon I am installing the seals.
