FLUSHING COOLING SYSTEM

#1

Post by head »

Has any one flushed out their cooling sys on a GL1000 with any of the coolant sys flush chemicals? and if any of them work with out harming any of the soft metals or pump. I suspect that my 75 GW has a bit of build up in it and would like to try some thing with out disassemblying the motor to clean it out. And or what other procedures has anyone done or rec amend?

If all you are doing is a coolant system flush then maybe you should be aware, but thought you would be alright, maybe others will disagree, they usually do!! I was going to do an overhaul and replace gaskets and O rings as a matter of course so I used a two part one that was suitable for aluminium engines and I did that first. In the end, I'll use a mixture of antifreeze with distilled water to cut down on the crud build up.

Can you repeat this, in some manner that we can actually comprehend.

There's a flush procedure in the Front Engine Renewal Project thread.

ShopTalk is a good place to find tutorials.

I agree with Chewy999's approach, use a flushing product designed for an aluminum engine, follow the instructions on the bottle, then use distilled water to mix with the antifreeze to fill up the cooling system. Again you need to be sure the antifreeze is also suited for an aluminum engine. In some locations the distilled water may be an overkill, but if your tap/well water is full of minerals (Very Hard Water) distilled will help in the long run. A GoldWing uses such a small amount of coolant the extra cost of distilled water is trivial.

Thanks guys I finally found (There's a flush procedure in the Front Engine Renewal Project thread.) It was listed as Finishing Up and I went right past it. I am glad that this is confirmed. I will proceed with flushing my 2 75s GWs. And I always use distilled water.

Over at the Walmarts in this neck of the woods, they got two kinds of distilled water. One's the store brand and the other is for babies, not sure what the difference is. They each cost less than a buck a gallon.

I think I went through four gallons during my first flush.

I have 3 gallons of distilled water for the lead acid battery's, which I have changed over too AGM's. I lucked out as my CB750s,sohc's and the cb900f and cb1100f take the same battery. So with the 10 bikes that use the same battery I bought 4 and switch them around to run them equally. The GW's like the extra cranking power. I just noticed a very small seep between the the left Head and coolant elbow on the 75 #2 GW,
It figures that it's doing this now and not before I did a clean and referb of the Carbs last fall!

Look close at the elbow where the pipe goes in. That joint is sealed with an o-ring that may be the culprit. I have read here that sometimes cool temps will cause them to seep a bit. Try cleaning it off and the warm the bike up. It could turn out to be a non-issue. Good luck.

Oldwing thanks for the heads up I thought before I looked closer, I think it is the Oring and not the flat gasket on the head. It needs serviced as it has been thru several heat and cool down cycles. Is it possible to pull the coolant tubes with the carbs in place, I know there is not much room!
I don't feel like pulling the carbs if I can finagle them in and out.
