Valve keepers

#1

Post by chewy999 »

Hi there, tried looking at previous threads but can't find the answer to my latest query.
I had to replace a couple of valves during my rebuild, and although the valve part numbers are the same, the actual valve ends, where the two retainers go, are of slightly different design. The grooves for the retainers are different lengths. I have managed to get the heads together, and tapped the end of the valves with a hammer and they seem solid enough, but is that suffice, or do you need the right retainers? If so, does anyone know the part numbers for the different designs? So close to putting the engine back in the bike,, but at the moment it's like two steps forward, one step back. :IDTS:

There is a difference in them. Not sure if they will interchange or not. But I would use the correct one. Considering what can happen if one lets go

Think I really knew what people would say, does anyone know where to get the different types? Don't want order any as bound to get the ones I already have so it would be pointless. When I get time, I'll take some photos an see exactly what I need. imsmilin

They are still available from Honda, and I'm sure David Silver has them. If not check with John at Wingovations. He's in Scotland, and a bit closer to you

Thanks for that Cyborg, actually got the valve from David Silver so will try there first, and have contacted John before. Sure it will be ok.

Got the heads off and had a good look at the difference in the ends of the valves. Due to the fact that the bike is 30 years old, it came as no surprise that I had both types. I'll try to explain the two types I have found.

Type 1. The valve has a small groove about 2 - 3 mm wide, and if you look at the retainers mating surface, towards the top, there is a definite lip that sits in the groove when the spring is relaxed.

Type 2. I believe, but may be wrong that this is a genuine Honda item. The groove where the retainer sits is much wider, approx 8 - 9 mm (may be 10!!!), and if you examine the mating surface for that types retainer, it is smooth all the way, so when you relax the spring the whole retainer is gripped.

Long story short, I had to order 4 from David Silver, sent an e-mail to confirm, and within 5 mins was phoned up by Lindsey to discuss my needs. Know they have opened up in the US, hope you are as impressed with them as we are in Blighty.

My only worry know is that someone tells me I'm talking twaddle, and some of my valves are from an FS1E!!!! lolol Again, with some of the things I have found whilst doing the work so far, I probably shouldn't be surprised.

Hope my findings are correct and of some use as we all strip away the mistakes of 30 years or so, and thanks for everyone who helps me with my queries.

I think both types of valves and keepers are genuine Honda, just different years. I have seen both types, but never mixed on a head

So do you think it's ok to mix and match, so long as the right keepers are used. Know it's not perfect, but we don't live in a perfect world!

Mix and match seems OK to me. Like you said. As long as the valves and the keepers match
