Today I did some proper testing on the cb set, and of course after removing the complete unit with cable from the bike and getting it into good light, the problem was obvious.

The wires on this unit's cable are very short inside the unit, and I'd managed to attach the one to the right, which is the shortest, and fires #3 & 4 on its terminal at a 45° angle so one corner of it was contacting the back plate.

Once it was repositioned I had normal operation. Before repositioning I had continuity between the moving contact and backplate with the right (3 & 4) points open or closed.

Derrrrrr

It's felt a bit uphill recently.

One thing I'd say to anyone thinking of fitting 78 cams to a 75-77 motor, it's a lot harder marking the flywheel for 'F' at 10° BTDC than if you're fitting 75-77 cams to a 78-79 engine!

Fitting early cams to a late engine, you need to mark 'F' at5° BTDC, which is conveniently half-way between the existing 'F' and 'T' marks.

The trouble with marking for 10btdc on an early flywheel is that you need to measure 15mm from the T mark, or 7.5mm from the existing F mark, which is almost impossible to do accurately with the flywheel in the engine, as the mark you are supposed to be measuring from is almost out of sight at the top of the inspection hole.

I used a punch, but I'm sure it's not quite where it should be.

I'm thinking of cutting a strip of magnetic plastic (like fridge magnets) exactly 7.5mm, which can be manoeuvred up to the F mark to allow me to place a sharp chisel exactly.

With luck, being magnetic, it won't fall into the engine......

Obviously I'll remove it before turning the engine over......

Glad to hear you found it. I had the same from one strand of copper which had unraveled from the points connector. Being that the case is aluminum, the idea of a magnetic strip should work. I would do a couple trial runs on something first. This bike seems to be very uncooperative. Maybe spend a little quality time talking with it first.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
