Exhaust valve looks ...

#1

Post by Kool_Biker »

I have just removed the RHS cylinder head of my 1976 GL1000 K1.
Are the 'looks' of the exhaust valves normal or are they trying to tell me something?
They have this hard, mustard colour deposits, both on their face (shown) and necks.
The heads of this 40K mile bike are removed for the 1st time.
Thanks

left side is cleaner than the right, did you do a compression or leakdown test before removal?

mighta come in handy to narrow down a possible ring or valve issue,

maybe just running a tad richer on the right,

i'd check to see how the valves are sealing right now and guide/stem clearances, then go from there

Agree with everyone else, not bad looking. I'd worry more about how wet the chamber and intake valves are (could just be from the flash). As was stated a compression and leakdown would tell you some things. You planning on installing new seals? Also check the stem dia. and guide clearance. I have two sets of heads at the machine shop right now. All needed new exhaust valve guides.

I ask too, why did you take the heads off? Gaskets look ok but it looks like the coolant may have been in there too long.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

The reason I removed the head was due to a tiny weep of coolant coming out from the base of the head coolant joint at the top.
I believe, like cracks, leaks are alive and it would only get worse with time. So, I tried to carefully undo the two bolts, to replace the little gasket.
One came out perfect. The other one, would - not - budge .. After fighting with it for few days (kroil, heat, the works), it snapped on me ..

After waisting some time thinking I could repair the rusted / broken remains of the bolt in situ, I took the plunge and had the head removed to properly repair it on my mill.

So there you are.

Of course these deeds always open endless cans of worms. In my case it went reasonably smoothly (for a >35 year old liquid cooled, previously undisturbed machine), with only one head stud creating a problems - I will need a helicoil.

Now I look forward to take the opportunity to check the head, inside and out. I am sure I will find few things and look forward to refresh.

Thankfully, the LHS head looks and feels perfect, so I will not even go near it with my tools.

Thanks again for all the support.

I'm a firm believer in doing both at the same time. Might as well take the other head off and go over it. Lap the valves in both. Do the other checks listed above. New valves seals and head gaskets. Then you know you'll be good to go for a long time. But that's me. ;)

+2 ..They say about compression within 10% of each cylinder, as soon as you remove, lap, replace valves you can change the ratio and have an unbalanced compression, If you do remove the valves and lap or repace it is best to do both heads.
If you dont change anything, just pull the head and replace the gasket ,put it back together then I wouldnt bother but it would have been a good idea to know the compression before you pull heads,

Compression ratios just before the head was pulled was measured at:
1. 150, 2. 149, 3. 149. 4, 146
And the bike run fine.
Not sure about the other head yet, not negative either. But let's see how this one pans out first ;-)
Cheers, all your comments are appreciated, Aris

Good compression readings, I would just clean it up, fix your threads, new head gasket and button it back together.
Only saying if you remove valves, surface head should you consider doing both.
