83 clutch B plate

#1

Post by jgenaw »

Hi Guys. I hope someone can give me some advice on this. I'm replacing the clutch in my 83 Interstate. I've been looking on here and the info I've been getting is priceless. I did run into 1 problem though, when I pulled the clutch basket out the B plate was in pieces. I read on here, I think, about removing it and inserting 2 more clutch discs instead. Wouldn't it be a better fit replacing it with 1 disc and 1 plate?

Thanks Sunnbobb that's the post I was thinking of. Apparently my steel trap of a mind didn't quite remember it correctly.

I've had an issue with my 1100 since I bought it two years ago. Sometimes when I'm first starting out, I get a loud buzzing sound from the clutch, and it's a bit grabby. It's been gettin g louder and more frequent in the last month or so. I'm worried that I'm headed for a bad day in my future. This could perhaps be what I'm hearing/feeling?

I hope you find all of the missing rivets! Sometimes one will get sucked into the scavaging oil pump and tear it up,causing hard shifting and hard to find neutral when at idle. The purpose of that pump is to remove oil from the clutch sump when the engine is running. With it not working, the clutch plates are immersed in an oil bath and can't release properly.Unfortunally, the only way to check the pump is to remove engine and rear cover to gain access to the pump.

Hey Alwing17, I think you're onto something here...

I wonder if the above is the cause of my current problems in a 76 Gl.

I just rebuilt the tranny because it kept popping out of first gear (found and replaced badly worn dogs and 1 fork), but I didn't think to look at the scavenging pump before putting the engine back together.

After reassembly I have problems with:
-can't find neutral at idle
-hard shifting
-clutch slipping

So I pulled the clutch, and everything was in spec (plates, springs) except for some noticeable wear on the basket fingers which I smoothed a bit with sandpaper (motor in frame, so I couldn't pull the basket).

I also found the original B plate had been replaced with an updated version with two rows of teeth...

So maybe the original B plate had disintegrated and the PO replaced it???...

Do you think a rivet lodged in the scavenge pump might have caused the PO's original problem of rough shifting to wear down the dogs on first gear?

Can someone explain the difference between the GL1100 B plate in his picture and the older pre-'78 dreaded GL1000 B plate?

Had seen that one prior, not seeing the difference between the early version and the later GL1000 (same as GL1100 '83) version. Old Fogey stated that the early one had a different construction, at (http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=50069).

Easy to check..Pull the clutch cover off on the center stand and see how much oil comes out..More than a few drops...Scavenging pump is not doing it's job. I only found out mine was bad when I did the 1200 clutch conversion w/the motor on the bench. I had replaced the stock clutch with a used one and a good B plate..Worked great for about 5 mins, until I rode it about 5 miles, then the hard shifting and inability to find neutral at idle came back.

You need 2 metal ones.
One to go where the clutch plate B was and one at the end of
Clutch pack.
I can't remember which end but it is important.
If you assemble clutch pack it should be evident which end.
I did my 83 gl1100 this June.
Make sure to remove and clean oil pick up on right side of motor.
You will find brass rivet remains in here.
Flush with clean oil to remove all nasty bits.

Alwing you are right again....I pulled the clutch cover and LOTS of oil drained out...(luckily I had a pan beneath it when I did...)

So it looks like I'll be working on the scavenging pump next...oh boy...
