Slide spring lengths?

#1

Post by ericheath »

While I am searching, does anyone have the length the slide spring should be on a 77. I have four sets, but two with me here. I was just swapping the slides and springs from one set to the other because one has the washers under the needle and he other doesnt. Look at what I found:

Ya think that might make the two sets act differently??? The question is, which one is correct? I know years ago someone posted all the lengths but my searches come up empty. TIA, Eric

your right. that is wrong. the short one is way to short. the long one looks about right. the secret is that all four are the same length. i think the manual gives the length for each model. if no one chimes in i qwill ck mine later

I can't say anything about the original length but the one on the left would be the correct one. The one on the right is way off.

Bob, my other left...lol. Yes, I went with the longer one. This probably splains a lot as to why my one 77 ran rich. The needles must have been up all the time. I have to get a Randakk kit and rebuild them. I think my other sets have good springs in them. They have other bads though.

Actually the length doesn't have as much to do with it as spring pressure. You would need to measure the spring pressure's at the same height to get an accurate reading of what you have. I believe there may be a measurement on the length but it may not matter. Just like valves springs I can show you 10 springs the same height that measure the same pressure at an equal length. We measure valves springs at installed height for that reason. We do the same with clutch springs. The shorter spring could be worn. You could also stretch the shorter one to match the long one. But that still doesn't mean it's right.

In the pic you can see the coils of the spring on the right are much closer together. I'm wondering what that thing is on top of that spring.
