Changing timing belts on 1100

#1

Post by quadrunner »

I'm in the process of rebuilding/painting my "83" 1100 and I'm wondering while I have the engine out of the bike can I change the timing belts, as I beleive I read somewhere when replacing belts the motor should be warm?

I like doing them on the bench,, easy as pie. I put the motor at TDC first, easier to aline new belts. Tempature is not a big deal with belts. Oil I do warm, valves must be done cold (as over night) so, I would do the valve's after the new belts are on. Make sure you run the motor over buy hand at least 2 full cycles before starting a valve adjustment, to make sure nothing hit's.

I don't think you want to try and change belts while the engine is warm. Usually by the time you get the radiator out of the way, after spilling the fluid all over, and the covers off it would be cool by then anyway. No just do them cold. The only thing I can think of that requires or suggested warm engine is oil change and carb sync.

This thread discusses belt changes and warm engines and it includes advise from Randakk. A warm engine is important.

That thread refer's to adjustment of the tensior on a warm belt and engine. Something that is rarely needed, after installation.

i did it with a cold engine, first i'm hearing about doing it with a warm engine,

i suppose that's the ideal way to go about it, the belts being adjusted at operating temps

I would warm up my engine first too, but It is really hard to do after the belts are off. I tried wrapping it in blankets but that just didn't seem to make any difference. lolol

make sure you turn over the motor a few times slow and manually by hand after swapping belts,

there must be no binding evident,

if you get it wrong and use the starter motor, you can quickly bend valves

easy enuff also to run the bike with the belts on, to warm it up and then adjust again

When I swapped the belts on both my bikes (1000 and 1200), I just set the tension with the spring (tightening down the bolts once it was set, of course) and called it good enough. I've got a couple thousand miles on my 1000 with no ill effects- no strange noises or squealing, etc. I'm sure it wouldn't be a bad idea to re-tension them with a warm engine, but (so far, at least) it doesn't seem like the end of the world if you don't.
