stator

Question is how to determine which went south, the stator, rectifier or regulator. All I know for sure right now is something did.

Get it running and measure the voltage of the three yellow wires. It is AC and you use one yellow as a ground and read the other 2 then swap it around. At @ 3,000 rpm you should be seeing about 50 Volts AC between the 3 yellows. There are also resistance checks with the engine off but the output test is what I prefer, If you have that then the Stator is good and you can move on to the rect or reg.

Thanks Whiskerfish, Will use that test today, one thing I did do was check the voltage of the yellow wire at the regulator plug there was none. In the shop manual for testing the rectifier it states-- forward bias-green to yellow 5-40 ohms. Do you put the red lead on green and black on yellow? When doing this I come up with 1.683 or something like that instead of 5-40,switch wires and get nothing.

Your post is confusing, are you sure your not trying to measure resistance while the meter is on the voltage scale? If you are then nothing will be correct.

Do a search ..Dynamic stator testing..It's in the how-to section in Guru's corner.

No I just went from the stator to the rectifier. Have not tested the stator yet with the method WF mentioned. Tried yesterday tying all three wires together and ground to ground cable readings like 80's to 104. Will see what happens today.

The other question refers to the shop manual for testing the rectifier.

i don't think tying all three yellow wires together is the correct way to test the output of the stator. and may even do damage to the stator. testing voltage between the legs perhaps would be better

It was yesterday before I posted that I tied the wires together. Will test as Whiskerfish stated today.

on the AC scale of the meter, just ck between the yellow leads, all possible combinations, with the engine running. should be about 50volts at 3000 RPM

Stator checked out at 58 to 61 volts depending on which multimeter was used.
Are these numbers acceptable?
