Repair for stripped carb bowl screw threads?

#1

Post by spiffy »

Doing final assembly of my rebuilt carbs and discovered that one of the carb body screw holes for a bowl screw is stripped. Almost ready to reinstall and then this! Anybody know of a good fix for this?

Thanks, Mike

Most stripped holes I use heli-coils. But for the smaller one's like on carb bowels I use time-serts. They are not cheap but they work very well. That is the best/correct way. Some have put bigger screws in them.

I've heard about time-serts but have never used one. Do any stores carry them?

You might get lucky. But even my very well stocked Hardware store didn't. I got mine from an online store.

If it's only one screw hole, I've substituted a standard size (not metric) screw and they hold up just fine. No need to drill or tap. Not sure of the size...(#8?) Later, if you want to drilll and tap, you still can...I had kept a subscribed thread on this very topic, but they were all deleted a while back to clear the website... :(

+1 just use a little bigger standard thread..or try retap with the correct MM size or wrap some steel wool around the bolt and screw it in..sometimes it will fill the grooves and hold tight...

It's rare to see a set of GL1000 carbs that don't have at least one stripped out bowl screw. The metal is soft, the threads are shallow, and the force exerted by expansion of the bowl gasket predisposes them to letting go just when brand new, correct length fasteners have reached the correct torque. (Over torqueing is probably the most common cause of torn threads.)

Many of the ones we see were done long ago and so we see all sort of "fixes." (I use the term loosely.)

It kind of comes down to whether you foresee ever taking them apart again.

If not, go for permanent/destructive. Sheetmetal, SAE, whatever you have handy. Just don't over tighten them and watch your screw length---there's no place for an over-long screw to go except into the body.

If on the other hand you look kindly upon a future rebuilder, use timeserts or helicoils (my personal preference but only because I designed a jig---takes about fifteen seconds per.) We thank you in advance! LOL.

I drilled and tapped all mine for next size up metric with stainless allen heads- several were stripped and I didn't want a bunch of different screws to keep track of

My.02,
I would avoid using socket drive screws 4mm or 5mm. Over tighten them (Easy to do with the added leverage of the hex wrench) and the carb is essentially junk. JIS 5 x 12 Plus drive is better and use a small JIS screwdriver to minimize the torque.
