smoking from both exhausts

#1

Post by bulldawg »

my 83 standard started smoking from both exhausts on the centerstand just after
startup and will not subside.still have 170 psi comp on all cylinders.pulled the
air filter and noticed some fuel in the plenum, located around #4. let it set for a while checked again and fuel was by #2 cul.maybe enough fuel got into the oil causing it to smoke like that?
what do you guys think? hope it did not score the walls.
also thanks for getting me back on the forum. it would not take my new password.

Do you turn your petcock off when you park your bike? My first thought is that you've got fuel in your oil. Drain you oil and see what you get.

I suggest start with the basics, what color smoke? Blue is oil, black is fuel, heavy white is coolant, should all smell different also. If oil, is oil level correct? Crankcase breather plugged? Stuck choke or fuel leaking in plenum may cause black smoke, should also run poorly. Coolant leak into cylinder would cause heavy white smoke, may run fine, should show some loss of coolant over time. Hope that can get you started in the right direction!

my 77 does this too, it will smoke out the left side or both sides on startup, sometimes.
I just ignore it and after a few minutes it goes away.
I've read that it's because of the way the oil lies in the flat engine and where the piston ring gap ends up when you park the bike.
Most starts are fine, but the occaisional one looks like a mosquito fogger, this happens most often when starting the bike next to a harley rider.

My 1000 runs quite well and the valve stem seals are pretty fresh but once in a while it will smoke like the bejesus. Doesn't stop unless I shut it off for about 10 seconds and then its done for a month or so (actually I don't recall it doing it this year). I also think that it's the ring gaps lining up occasionally that causes the problem. I never shut off the petcock and oil consumption is pretty low.
With compression numbers like you have it can't be anything serious. If the valve stem seals are as old as the bike then maybe you should consider replacement. They aren't expensive and it can't hurt. A crankcase flush might be a good idea too. Old oil varnish can clog the ring grooves and a flush can help clean them out.

To minimize the oil seepage into the cylinders when parked, I place the kickstand on a 1" block of wood, keeping the bike as upright as safely as I can. I'm too puny to use the center stand. No smoke on startups. Some bikes that have been "parked" for a long time(years) will smoke for some time after they are put back in service. Most all kick the habit after a period of time in use.
For the early year models, '75-77, I replace their kickstands with those from '78-79. The later years are a bit longer and keep the bike upright more. Even then, I still find that a shim of wood helps keep the cylinders empty of oil.
The difficult can be done in a day. The impossible takes a little longer, if you don't know it can't be done.

The smoking is at it worst when there's anyone in the area observing. The GW's enjoy embarrasing their owners. :IDTS:

Funny story...

I stopped to get gas a few days ago on my 1000, and about when I was ready to take off a woman on a Harley pulled up behind me. Like, RIGHT behind me. Probably only a foot or two away. Anyway, finish filling up, go to start it up-

POOSH! GIANT cloud of smoke everywhere.

Almost felt sorry for the woman. lolol

Hey Don this might make you feel even better again.

Might motor never smoked at all but it had the diesel clatter that drove me nuts so I rebuilt it.

Now with new rings and everything else in the engine it's as quiet as mouse, runs amazing and smokes every time I start it crying1

I don't think it's anything other than the nature of the beast

I was really concerned about it at the start but seeing nothing is wrong with the bike when I ride it I am going to leave it and see what happens.

It only has a grand 250kms on it since rebuild so suck it and see.
