To repair it I removed the oil filler cap, duct taped my shop vac to the oil filler hole
so when I turned the vac on I had vacuum in the crankcase and head.
I let it suck some carb cleaner into the crack, then a teensy bit of JB weld.
I did it with the engine hot so the heat made the JB weld really runny so it could suck in good.
worked fine for years!
Amazing! Just amazing!

All of you is praising this JB weld so much. Here in RSA we do not know it. What does it look like , maybe we've got something similar by another name.

JB Weld is an epoxy with metal filler. There should be other brands you can source locally.

Thats a good method for sealing castings and a very valid industrial method. I've
seen all sorts of aluminum, steel and iron castings vacuum sealed with epoxy compounds
to make them pressure tight or liquid tight.

They draw a vacuum on the casting and spray on a thin epoxy that is drawn
into the porosity of the cast material. Nice adaptation for home use!

Fish, if you had posted earlier, and I had seen the crack on the inside, I would have tried something like that. I think it's good for the summer.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
