Neutral Switch Fix

#1

Post by Cakey »

I wanted a backup neutral switch in case mine failed. Had a spare that did not test good so gave it a shot.

1. Undo top and remove components
2. Soaked everything in vinegar and cleaned
3. Cleaned contacts with 600 paper
4. Assembled back together
5. Used gasket goo on thread. Oil, petrol and temperature safe

Hope it saves someone a couple of bucks in the future.

Finish assembly

Thanks Whiskerfish. I could not find anything in my searches only the discussions on running high voltage current through the switch which I was not keen on doing.

Anyway I had no test results to start with and now it's testing good.

Yeah 2 in shoptalk with reference to a third article I found on the web (no longer there but captured in the gallery.) Between those 3 and this one, cleaning the switch is easier than "accessing" the switch.

Good on yah Roncar. Thanks for pointing in the right direction.

I like your trick with the tool. I am going to try that tonight as the second one is being quite stubborn to remove the thread top bit and I don't want to destroy my circlip pliers or the threaded cap.

Just out of curiousty how long has your neutral switch lasted since you cleaned and installed in the bike? Just wandering if this is a semi permanent type of fix as to me there does not seem to be to much that could go wrong with it once cleaned.

The second one that I am doing is already working but if it is a pretty permanent type of fix then I will dismantle and clean it regardless.

Look forward to your feedback on duration of fix.

To be totally honest, the neutral switches in my bikes work, so I have not used a rebuilt one yet. "Hal" has installed a rebuilt one and I haven't seen him post of a failure yet.
