Windshield

Post by netttech »

I know adding a windshield negates a 'Naked Goldwing'. However sometimes it's just abusive to ride on windy days.

That being said, has anyone found a windshield that fits well on these old Wings? I don't want the orignal Fairing.

I bought & mounted a SlipStream Spitfire (15"Hx17W) on the Wing. It works 'somewhat' but really can't see much of a difference on windy days. Especially at Internstate speeds.

Anyone else had good luck finding, mounting a WS on the ole Wings?

On "windy" days it won't matter how big the shield is. A cross wind will blow you around. Even worse with a large shield or full fairing. Even straight in to a strong wind they will act weird.

Brandt, I contacted Memphis Shades & the reply was, No we don't have anything that will fit, your goldwing'. I contacted them because I have a Memphis Fats (17"H) on my VTX1300. It's the Rose color (came with bike) & plan to replace it with Clear. I thought, if they had brackets that would fit the GW, I would cover the Rose portion & mount it on the Wing. DO you do what brackets you used? I have the quick release brackets on the VTX.

17"H should work fine for me.

Yea I know sidewinds push the Wing around easily (a lot more than my VTX).

However, at 65mph, the pounding on my chest is what I want to eliminate. There have been several times I felt like I was getting blown off the bike.

I've ridden my VTX without the Memphis Shade on & there isn't near as much wind pounding my chest. Something is different between the bikes....for sure.

THanks for the replies!

At 65mph I thought it was my Tshirt that was slapping my neck. I managed to discover that it's actually my neck that's slapping my neck. Damn!

I agree riding without a shield wears me out at hwy speeds for very long. I've tried several now and you can make most work as long as brackets on the shield extend to either side of the gauge/forks. I found a road warrior sheild at a garage sale that provides great protection but it is a bit ugly. It mounts easily some sort of universal fit I guess, don't know what it came off of.

I had a National Cycle Plexifairing 3 on my GS850 and loved it so when I wanted a windshield for my '82 Naked GW I knew right await what to get. Provides excellent wind protection, is very solid 4 point mount. There are flair-outs that keep wind off your hands so even in cold weather my hands don't get cold. Particularly nice for a naked is that you can take it off or put it back on in about 2 minutes so for around town you can ride without.

With that windshield, a full face helmet and ear plugs you can ride at highway speeds for hours in complete comfort.

Ditto to plexifairing...easy to remove when you want to go naked and if you want to make it look like a Batwing you can paint the inside of it.

I put an EMGO café type fairing on my 76 Wing and it bolted on, NO PROBLEMS, just cut a bit at turn-signals-
I bend over a bit at high speeds when needed. I have the stock handlebars
This for around $85 dollars and it looks sharp, everyone loves it who sees it.
It actually adds to the looks most fairings are obtrusive and big. IMO

Personal preference.

Memphis Shades FTW!

It was easy to modify some brackets to get it to fit my 79.
