Neutral Switch replacement

#1

Post by Newby »

I'm looking at a water pump job and was wondering why it is recommended to replace this switch as well?

Because they fail. If yours hasn't, it probably will. Some places require it to pass inspection.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

On the 1100 it is in the transmission cover. Easy to get too since you already have it off to do the water pump. But if your's has been working well it's a toss up whether to do it or not.

If its working leave it alone. Looks like you have a 82. Early 1100s have it like the 1000s. JB

My mechanic says he can change the neutral switch by loosening up the motor mounts and slightly moving the engine.
He states about 2-3 hours of work without the part cost.
I don't have mine working but getting into neutral is pretty easy so I don't need the light, just pull in the clutch for starting.
But I'm in a warm weather climate....................

Not on an 82 he can't. The 80-81GL1100s are like the GL1000s the neutral switch is located on the right lower side of the engine behind the frame. On the 82-83 the neutral switch is a completely different design not prone to failure like the earlier models. Its location is in the transmission cover and cannot be replaced without removing the cover. You will be removing the cover in order to replace the water pump but unless the neutral switch is giving you problems I would not replace it.

Sorry, the part "I SAID"was easy was pulling in the clutch to put it into neutral for stating( I have a 1976), I
never suggested changing the switch was easy or cheap( hence mine is not fixed).
