Stripped 1200 Rear Shock Mount... Options?

#1

Post by Lucien Harpress »

I wasn't even sure this was possible, but I found out that, yes, it IS possible to strip out the lower shock mount on the right hand side on a GL1200. I had to swap out the shocks because one was leaking, and everything was going fine until I had to bolt up the last shock (of course). As I said, it's the right-hand shock, lower mount. Basically, the threaded hole in the final drive is toast. The actual bolt is still fine, but all the threads on the final drive are gone.

So.... what are my options here? It's not exactly a straightforward thing to take care of, no matter how you look at it. Any ideas?
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

Never used a heli-coil before, but I remember a write-up here about it. I just wasn't sure how hard it would be to get to.

I'll have to ask my dad about it when I get home from work tonight. He's dealt with this before, I'm sure.

It just ticks me off a little because my 1200 is supposed to be my RELIABLE Goldwing! (Suffice to say I'm letting everything sit for a little without my touching anything... fly into a rage )
