In frame clutch replacement in GL1100?

#1

Post by Easter »

Octanes tutorial covers the 1000 but it is not clear if the same general procedure can be followed with the 1100. Like the water pump I replaced at two hundred miles, now the clutch at 300 miles is showing signs of giving out. (and I thought it looked OK!).

I am not sure if it can be changed or not with out pulling the motor but I
would at least give it a try what is the worst thing that might happen
you have to pull the motor good luck

Today was warm, around 70 degrees and my Sears Lift arrived so I threw a sheet of plywood on the carport floor and jacked the bike as far up as it would go. Just to be safe, I used the included straps and a ratchet lift to the roof truss. Gathered all my 10mm wrenches, extensions, etc. and went to work. I had a stool handy but found I was still laying on the ground working under the rear tire. It wasn't all that hard to get the clutch cover off using just a 10mm socket on a 3/8 ratchet with a couple of different extensions. Slow going getting the plate off that holds the springs in. Diss-assembly took about two hours total. I have the clutch plates, gasket, and springs on order so it will be a few days before I try to put it back. I don't see any reason it can't be done but it is tedious and you must, absolutely must be down under the bike to reach all the bolts. Thanks to all who commented here and on the other thread.

Yes, thanks, I have read and re-read Octane's tutorial and saved a tray of oil for just that purpose. I have done several clutches in other bikes before so know the importance of bringing the lifter plate into tension carefully. Appreciate the reminder.
