You can use ATF in a pinch but, MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) is a better choice. Drain 1 qt. of oil, replace with MMO, go for an easy 100 mile ride, then drain and refill with oil. Good for cleaning many dirty things from your engine including your starters sprag clutch. I run it through mine at the end of every season.
