Powder coating

#1

Post by Easter »

I have the frame stripped and ready to powder coat along with the gas tank and assorted other parts. Question, has anyone powder coated the exhaust headers? Or the inside of the gas tank? ?

I know Deek was doing headers pretty regular for a while there. I have no idea on fuel tanks.

Exhausts can be powdered with high temp powder or ceramic. We have a nearby shop that does them. As for coating the inside of the tank, not sure if any product is guaranteed against gas..

There a at least two members here doing powder coating. I suggest you seek them out as you'd probably, 1. Get a better job and 2. Get a better price. I had my headers powder coated and I've long forgotten the pain of the price ($175) for both. Although, I must say they did an outstanding job with the blasting and sanding. They even powder coated the interiors. They were done two years ago and still look like the day I brought them home.

Regarding the tank, you cannot powder coat the interior of a fuel tank. If you want to spend some money on your tank, have it nickle plated. Do that, and it will be rust free forever.

I'm sure this has been brought up in another thread, but Eastwood has a motorcycle gas tank sealer kit.

I haven't used it, I just try to keep my tanks full. Down here in Florida, bare metal seems to rust before your eyes.

I do a lot of powder coating in my business (not motorcycle-related) with epoxy powders. Just my opinion, but there's no way I would trust it to hold up against gasoline over time. I don't want to image what would happen to the carbs when it starts dissolving! crying1

Thanks all for your input.

Just wondered about the gas tank since there are so many liquid coatings available for the inside and I would question why they would hold up any better than powder coating. I have seen the mess they can make if the coating starts to flake off.

Sunbob, thanks for the quote I will keep it in mind but the headers I had in mind turned out to be the early style GL 1000 and not the later style with the turned up outlet. So I am still looking for headers. The project is just at the stage where it is starting to go back together so some of this stuff will not happen for a while yet.

Thanks
Gary

You can definitely powder coat the headers with a high temp powder and they should hold up fine. I would not do the inside of a tank, however. I doubt that it would hold up over time. If you're going to have the frame done, talk to your local PC'er about doing the headers too. I would imagine that he'll give you a decent price since he's already going to do your frame. If the price seems ridiculous for the headers, let me know. I can do them for a very reasonable price.

Red Kote is probably the best internal sealer out there right now for tanks. http://www.damonq.com/Techsheets/Red-Kote.pdf
I had my first one done with this about 5 -6 years ago now and it still looks like the day it was done. I took it to a radiator shop and let them do it all.

+1 on Red Kote, just make sure you let it cure/dry completely.
