I'm in the process of a build on a 77 GL1000. I am trying to remove and replace the cover over the stator. It just won't budge and the aluminum is just disintegrating when I use a vise grip...I am beginning to think its time to drill it out and weaken it so I can just break the darn thing with a chisel....had anyone gone to war with one of these? Any suggestions?
Secondly, the bike wasn't drivable when I bought it and tore it down - is there some way to test the stator now while the rear cover is off, or do I just need to get it running and hope?

use a multi meter to ck the resistance between the yellow leads. all combinations should be about the same . then when its running measure for voltage on all three combinations. should be 55-60 AC

Re: 77 GL 1000 Stator Cover and stator question
If you are talking about the little plug over the Stator Bolt then it often requires a excessive amount of force. not sure why but it is one of those that seems to tighten itself. Often a chisel used around the outside edge can be worked it the loosening direction to get it started.

Good old chisel solved the problem....sometimes I just feel the need to ask stupid questions before I hammer on something expensive....

I don't think that cover is that expensive and others have said its still available from Honda but I don't have personal experience with replacing one.

Re: 77 GL 1000 Stator Cover and stator question
In earlier threads it's been said that it is the same plug used for 750 valve adjusts. Very plentiful still.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: 77 GL 1000 Stator Cover and stator question
Thank you for the torque tables.
The "bolts" are actually 3 screws that secure the stator. I will check the fiche to see if that is stock as well as research if Loctite breaks down under the heat from the engine.
