Getting ready to do this conversion. Thanks to all for the great advice.

Do I need to remove the rear engineer cover to do this conversion? Just trying to make sure I have all the needed gaskets for the job, so far I have the clutch cover gasket and seal. I would love to leave it alone if possible...

If I am not mistaken, if you are just adding hydraulics to the GL1000 clutch, the rear engine cover does not need to come off. I do "think" you will need to move the engine forward to fit the new clutch cover and slave cylinder. If you are putting in a 1200 clutch in your 1000, then yes the rear cover needs to come off, and you will need the oil pump gear that goes with the 1200 clutch.

Based on OF and Sunnbobb's posts, I believe it is a swap of the the clutch assembly from the basket backwards to the slave cylinder. The only switch is the clutch plate and modified pushrod. Just not sure about the rear housing removal.

You can do either one or both. Change out the basket and all internal 1200 parts is one mod. But just changing the outside cover to the 1200 cover with the Hydraulic slave is another. Just the cover can probably be done without moving the engine.

I have read both posts, and I am doing the complete 1200 switch. The question I have is whether the rear engine cover needs to be removed for this option? I need to get the gasket if it does.

Lads, are you putting a complete 1200 clutch in it, or just a 1200 cover assembly? If you change to the 1200 clutch with different oil pump sproket, I believe you do infact have to remove the rear cover.

Removing the rear cover would certainly make it easier, regardless of which way you go

Yes the rear cover needs to be removed for this. You also need the oil pump gear for the 1200. The 1200 basket has one extra tooth on its gear, and the chain is the same, so you need the 1200 oil pump gear to make it work. This will also run your oil pump ever so slightly faster, and that should be a good thing. I am doing the same to the 1000 motor I am building. Great mod!

Thanks to all. I am ordering a new gasket. Any additional Owings, seal and gaskets beyond the following:

Clutch cover gasket
Rear Case gasket
Oil seal - 91202-216-003 (original ref #34)

What about oil seal #35 or #36?

I guess I am looking for the 84 oil pump gear. Posted in "Wanted" but thought I would show it here.

You will have to check, but I know the 84 or 85 clutch basket will work, but probably not later years, as they changed the design. That said, I am willing to bet that ANY year 1200 clutch oil pump gear will work. I don't have 100% knowledge but it is just a ratio thing and I doubt they changed the oil pump drive ratio when they changed clutch design, so look into that, may make finding a gear easier.
