Re: Brake formula? Recipe? Parts list?
I had braided lines, stock master, and EBC organic Kevlar pads last season and today took my test ride with the same setup except with 2 piston calipers. Pretty amazing difference.

I bought these, two 32mm pistons vs one 28mm piston. I'll need at least a left bracket.

I used a pair of calipers from an 85 VF750 and brackets I bought from Tomk1960. Amazing difference.

Re: Brake formula? Recipe? Parts list?
I'm told Honda made twin piston calipers in 25, 27, 30 and 32mm. I went for the 32mm ones. Next up is finding brackets that fit both ends. The right may work but not the left. I'll begin with stock gl brackets and maybe 82cb750 brackets.
The theory is that guys that didn't see any change may have the smaller ones. Just a guess but we'll see. I'll have some recently fresh stock calipers to peddle when I get done.

Re: Brake formula? Recipe? Parts list?
Most, if not all of the early to mid 80's calipers have the same two mounting points, so they'll interchange and fit the various brackets that were used on the different bikes that had dual front calipers. The trick is to find brackets that fit the GL forks and position the calipers correctly over the GL rotors. The brackets used on the 750F and 900F work great. It's possible that the brackets used on the Customs will work as well.

Re: Brake formula? Recipe? Parts list?
Thanks for the help and encouragement. I'm finally starting to trust this old gl. to get me anywhere. I still have the jammer and bags on it but have collected the parts to go original. I want this to be my long haul bike for a trip this summer.

Re: Brake formula? Recipe? Parts list?
32mm calipers and cb900f brackets are on the way. New brake lines next. I'll price out stainless and fittings. I have a connection at a hose company a few hours away. I'll make a list and email it to them.
I'm considering two lines from the m/c to the calipers, does anyone have a preference? I accidently bought a set of that style for an 83 with linked brakes once. Those are still around here somewhere. I'm not sure if anything is usable in this case.

I got calipers today. I'll try to photo document this swap. I've been able to post some photo's recently, maybe I can make a few stick here.

Re: Brake upgrade? Recipe? Parts list?
Here are the essentials you need for upgrading to dual piston calipers and how I kit the upgrade:

Calipers, hangers, mounting bolts, seals, pistons, pads, and the various hardware that comes with the calipers. These calipers are from the CB750F/900F/1100F bikes. The hangers are from the 750F/900F's. 1100F hangers are different and can't be used. As I mentioned earlier, the calipers and hangers from the Customs should also work. The little chrome piece is the speedo cable guide which conveniently works out nicely with this setup.

Re: Brake upgrade? Recipe? Parts list?
Very nice, that's an easier way to go about this swap. I got lucky, my calipers and brackets came with bolts so that's one less worry. Are the parts powder coated? they really look good.

Yes - I powder coat every caliper I restore and by now I've done a couple hundred of them. They're a specialty of mine.Don R wrote:Very nice, that's an easier way to go about this swap. I'm hosed, these are my 81cb900F brackets, I bought both before seeing pictures of what works.

Re: Brake upgrade? Recipe? Parts list?
Maybe you can get a refund. Those were listed as 900F caliper brackets and clearly they aren't. The seller misrepresented what he listed. If you had been buying them for a 900F, you would have been stuck as well. I'd contact the seller first and if he doesn't want to cooperate, lodge a complaint with eBay next. I bet the seller will work with you since it isn't worth the bad feedback for a few bucks.Don R wrote:I'm hosed, these are my 81cb900F brackets, I bought both before seeing pictures of what works.
