For instance, when I put new tires on my red '75 and attempted to set the bead, I was able to put in 55 lbs of pressure in the front tire before I chickened out and took the wheels and tires to a shop. That sucker was tight! In the course of doing this in the shop, the guy said it took NINETY POUNDS of pressure before it seated! They were nervous too...!
a spray bottle with dish detergent and water is your friend..spray the bead before you put the tire on the rim.

5speed- yeah, did that - it's not getting the tire on, it's getting it to *pop* into place and seat the bead. Putting all that pressure in there to get it to do that can be a bit suspenseful. I've only had two tires blow on me, and both were rotted out to begin with; I was only adding some air to make it easier to roll around the shop. But when you have a new tire and it just won't seat...well...you're a braver man than I if you push that PSI over fifty. A car tire usually only takes 33!

Sucker's loud too when they do go - like, 12 gauge loud...

Real tire bead lube isn't expensive and I find they seat easier with it too.

The hardest time I've ever had getting beads to seat was when I put new tubeless tires on my riding mower a few years ago. Once they inflated getting the beads to pop into place was easy but it was impossible to get the beads to both contact the rim enough for the tire to start to inflate. I tried strapping them and a few other things and was about to give up and buy tubes when I came across the bucket trick.

Back in the day, I would squirt some carb cleaaner in the tire, lay a trail of it, and light it off....but I was younger then.... sorta

Just an fyi, most tires will say 60psi max , since I’ve been doing my own tire mounting I’ve had a couple that were a real bear to get seated, I use actual tire mounting lube and occasionally even wd40 on the one’s that don’t freely seat.

I hope you're joking. I've heard of tires moving on the rim with that stuff.

Bob, are you talking armour-all or wd-40 ? For the WD40 if you apply it to an old tire you’ll see it absorb into the rubber fairly quickly, good for the rubber as it’s fish oil based, not slippery at all after it absorbs in. I use it to dress the tire sidewalls when I do a show. Armour-all does stay greasy/slippery, I don’t use it. Anyway that’s what I do.

I meant Armorall. It has no place near a tire at any time.

BTW, WD40's website denies that it contains fish oil.

I ride my bikes pretty much to their limit and never had an issue with it.

I've heard of all kinds of stuff I've never seen happen. I've used tire lube, soapy water, vinyl treatment, and installed dry and I've never had a tire move on the rim unless it was deflated from a puncture.

Even if those stories are myth I wouldn't put anything slippery near my tires.

And as I said, proper bead lube isn't expensive, works better, doesn't glue the beads to the rim like dish liquid and isn't slippery after it dries.

I've had good results with Windex window cleaner. Dries right up without residue.
