questions about rebuilding fuel pump [gl1000/gl1100]

#1

Post by jml74 »

I'm trying to replace the diaphragm in my GL1000 fuel pump a la this thread, but I've got a couple of questions (if I can get this sorted out and working I plan on doing a simplified writeup for anyone interested--there's a lot going on in that thread to try and take in). After I drill out the rivet holding the diaphragm in place, is the wide part remaining at the top of the small post supposed to be removed as well, or is that where I should drill and tap? Also, I'm replacing the diaphragm with one from Marx parts that is mentioned in the same thread; the plates on either side of the OEM diaphragm should be reused to sandwich the new one, right?

Yes, the wide part is what you drill & tap. I found I needed the plates on either side of the original diaphragm plus a small washer under the head of the new screw.
BTW: Mine is still working fine all these years later.

Awesome, thanks. I'm a little worried about the screw vibrating loose over time; did you put on any threadlocker, or has it stayed tight all this time?

I think I used threadlocker but to be honest I can't remember for sure this many years later.

I have replaced the fuel pump on both my Wings in the last few years. The part number has been superceded as I would THINK they have upgraded the diaphragm rubber to deal with modern ethenol fuel..

I tried rebuilding and finally gave up & bought a new one. Couldn't get the rebuild to work.

count me as one who simply bought a new pump. It wasn't crazy expensive (like that $110 petcock or $700 starter for Triumphs), easy to install, and no worries.
