Front engine hanger bolt size?

#1

Post by 78-gl1000 »

Hey everyone

I know this has been asked before but I couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

Does anyone know the size (diameter and length, bolt grade too if anyone can figure that out) of the front hanger bolt? To be clear I'm talking about the long hex but that goes through the frame on both sides, plus the whole way through the engine casing. Number 10 on the frame section of the parts diagrams.

I'm asking because I'm restoring a wing currently and it has some cool crash bars, as I was tightening the bolt down after I took some stuff off, it destroyed the threads on one end. When I looked at it, it's a long bolt with threads on both end and two nuts. My suspicion is that a longer one was provided with whatever kit it came from. Im guessing I will have to find something comparable and that the stock will be too short. If anyone has any insight that would be amazing!

Cheers

You can obviously use any threaded rod or bolt that fits the hole.

Unless you are doing a concourse level restoration.

Yep, all thread will work just fine. There is a handy tool on the forum, when you post a topic, if you scroll down toward the bottom of the page, you will find similar topics, and often you will find an answer. Almost works better than the search function sometimes.

Fastenal 47671 high strength threaded rod will do the trick nicely.

^^^ What he said. I wouldn't trust a grade 2 threaded rod from the local hardware store for that....

I believe he did mention it needed to be longer because of the crash bars.

How long does it need to be? Honda supplied longer ones for bikes with Hondaline crash bars but I don't know if they ever sold the bolts separately.
