Locking Catch Pins - Luggage Brackets
Hello All!
I've been putting together a 1978 GL1000 with kind of a classic-sport look, and I recently acquired a set of vintage Samsonite removable saddlebags from eBay, and the lock cylinders have been removed.
I knew this going into it, and now I'm on the hunt. If anyone has a couple they would like to sell OR can get me some really good photos of the mechanisms, that would be fantastic!
Also, if anyone has some suggestions on retro-fitting the brackets, I'm open to that as well. Finding locking push-catch cylinders doesn't seem to be the easiest thing to do (if that's even what they are... kinda shooting blind, here).
Any help is appreciated - Thanks so much!

Re: Locking Catch Pins - Luggage Brackets
Thanks so much wingrider! Those photos are SUPER helpful. Do the pins have a spring and retract? Or do you unscrew the pin using the key until it clears to release the luggage? I don’t have much knowledge of how the actual mechanism works... pretty much running on guesses.
I’ve been online for days looking at quick-release ball pins, spring plungers, indexing plungers, lock cylinder plungers, etc... so far, no dice. They definitely seem like a specialty item, but I’ll keep plugging away. Might have to rig up a non-locking version with some McMaster Carr components.
Thank you again!!

No spring that can be seen. Push the key in, and it the inner black "bolt" turns in the chrome housing.
They probably are now a specialty item, seems back in the day, a few different bags had these. Could be a faulty memory on my part though.

I have the same bags on my 78 but the keys are different.
My keys are the same type as the ignition but shorter.
Your's seem to be the security type key.

That is interesting...I knew Samsonite had different keys, but always thought they were just for the locks on the bags, not the mounting locks. After almost 40 years, guess it isn't surprising some things are different.SnoBrdr wrote:

The bags themselves do not lock strangely enough.

Re: Locking Catch Pins - Luggage Brackets
I just bought some tubular lock cylinders on eBay - 5/8" x 5/8" in black. https://www.ebay.com/itm/LOF-OF-2-5-8-T ... 2749.l2649wingrider wrote:No spring that can be seen. Push the key in, and it the inner black "bolt" turns in the chrome housing.

Looks like I'll be spending little time in the machine shop at work soon.
wingrider... in your photos, it looks like the threaded pin is held onto the cylinder with a roll pin inserted into a through-hole?

Re: Locking Catch Pins - Luggage Brackets
My guess is that there is a groove cut into the threaded pin, and that roll pin sticks in enough so that it doesn’t fall out, but lets it spin to lock the bag on.
I was out in the garage this evening and was wondering if you found anything...those look like they might work with a bit of modification.
