Alternator output GL1000
Anyone know the wattage output of the alternator on a '75 GL1000? I've installed a new headlight with an H4 bulb that's 60/55watts which is a bit higher than the original 40/50watt arrangement. I've put LED's everywhere else but don't want to upset the alternator.

Specs are in the FSM I just don't have access to one right at the moment. It is in the first sections of the FSM under specifications.

If that is the only thing you have done with a higher demand then you should not have any issues.

Re: Alternator output GL1000
Best is to check battery charging at various rpms while riding..real time test..voltmeter attached to battery..at idle should read close to 12v's at 3,500 13.5 or so..if you get that you should be good...so many variables in older bikes..wires,connections, regulator/rectifier, connectors, etc..running test the only sure way to know

Re: Alternator output GL1000
Last I looked said the alternator is rated at 360 watt. My 84 interstate has all original lighting and will keep up with a heated vest and heated glove liners if used on the highway most of the time. As already mentioned a quick check with a voltmeter at 3,000 rpm is a good idea. You will actually need 13.5 volts to actually be recharging the battery. I see 14 at 3,500 even if the fan is running. All with a good and fully charged battery to start.

Re: Alternator output GL1000
Yes I will keep an eye on voltage. If it's true that the alternator always puts out full current and the unused part is dumped to the heat sink, then maybe overloading it wouldn't hurt it eh? Thanks Jean. I think 300 watts is it. I'll add up all my wattages and see where I stand.

Re: Alternator output GL1000
I have tried to do that a couple of times but the ignition circuit always seems to stump me due to the constant cycling. I know I got close once and on a stock bike working perfectly I came to the conclusion you could add dual 35 watt driving lights but not dual 55's. So upgrading the single existing should not be even a blip on the radar.
