I really need to know how to test a Dyna ignition right now

Post by Sidecar Bob »

I installed a brand new Dyna S in the spring of 2012. A few weeks ago it felt like half the engine wasn't working but before I could stop and check things it started working right again and I pretty much forgot about it until today. It was hard to start after sitting in the rain at work all day and the power was way off - much like it was wit5h the old points before I installed the Dyna.

When I got home I used a neon bulb to check for spark and found that the front cylinders are not firing. I switched the coils and the same cylinders are still not firing so I know it isn't the coil, wires or caps.

Is there any way to figure out if the Dyna is at fault other than putting the points back?

I need to know pretty fast because I have to have it working to drive to work tomorrow morning.

Never had to test mine but I know that if you call Dyna that they will tell you how to test it.

Might be kinda late to do that at this point so hopefully someone has already done this.

But even if you knew it had gone bad, all you could do was put the points back in or walk to work.

Put the points back in.
I just had another Dyna go out on me and I'm an expert now. The symptoms are exactly as you describe. Intermittent cutout of one coil but it isn't the coil.
I received a new Dyna ignition (warranty) from Dynatek a couple of days ago. It's a new design. I only got about 4000 miles out of the previous one. The whole exchange thing took about 10 days.

I did the ohmmeter test according to http://www.dynaonline.com/skins/downloa ... naSTSG.pdf (thanks jimmyz) and both modules read the same.

When I tried doing the voltmeter test I couldn't see the magnet they are talking about so I just turned the engine over with a wrench and watched the meter. The blue wire reads in the right range but the yellow wire reads about 4V except when it is triggered and at full voltage.

I guess I will have to put the points in.

This one lasted about 9900 Km. 10 days sounds good but I'll bet it will take longer from Canada. I guess I'm going to put the points back in.

I just installed my warranteed DynaS too. I hope the new design lasts longer than the recent reports of failures. My swap took around six weeks. Dyna is pretty fair. The warranty is one year, but they usually offer a new set for around half of new cost.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I had to get my wife to drive me to work today and a co-worker to bring me home. I have several old sets of points but they are all in pretty rough shape so I guess I will go at the best ones with a file and install them tonight.

I got a reply from Dyna today but they need my mailing address before they can do anything. Even if they send me a replacement I have a feeling that I will be finishing the season with the points and installing the replacement in the spring.

Well, its absolutely confirmed. After spending over an hour filing the best old points I had smooth I installed & timed them and it fired up and ran on all cylinders.

It turns out that Dyna wants my street address, not my mailing address. I hope they aren't going to ship by UPS. For that matter, what are they going to ship? I would have thought that they would email me a printable mailing label first so that I can send them the defective one.

Yeah, most places need an ROA before you can send something back.

Yeah, but like I said, that could be a printable shipping label and they don't need my street address for that.

They need it so there is a return address on the shipping label.

I suppose.

Anyway, the bike ran better today with the points than it has for the last few weeks. The Dyna must have been on its way out for a while.

I received a Return number from Dyna and shipped the old one (from spring of 2012) to their facility in Belgrade, Montana. They tested it to confirm it was blown and sent me a new one.

The Dyna must have been on its way out for a while.
I had a brand-x/no-name electronic ignition module fail this past April. Started out as an intermittent miss when the engine was up to operating temperature and gradually progressed to complete failure. The failure mode was an open circuit. I replaced it with a Dyna (the "new" style) and it has been working well so far.

The office is in CA, the testing facility is MT, and they are shipped from NV.
