WILL it work? More than likely. I have seen automotive solenoids wired in and they worked fine. My biggest concern is the small amount of space to work in and the very close proximity of the frame. Shorting one of the terminals to the frame is definitely NOT a good thing. That said, I might consider this as an emergency road trip repair to get me home. But would get a proper one and replace ASAP. Probably one with the built in blade fuse if I didn't have a spare at home. If you go this route, use WF's diagram to wire it not the top one. (Ditto mrbswing, just more verbose  )

Do not put hte fuse where they say or else you will have a fused starter. Just hook one large terminal to the battery, one to the starter and the fuse should be connected between the battery and the rest of the bike (AA, not B in the Napa diagram) using one terminal of the solenoid as a junction instead of between the battery and the solenoid. Other than that, it should be fine.

i realize this isnt the best way to do it, but i work in a building behind napa. it is so conveinent. and i am getting sick of my bike not going. i want it done now and am to impatient to order parts. after i get it going, i will look up frenchy or mr bill. i am so frustrated that all my hard work is just sitting in the driveway. the damn thing is registered and insured already and i cant use it. You need a ride and then a dozen or so beers.
Do it right. Shortcuts suck! 3 years from now when it craps out and you look at a stock schematic nothing will make sense. Get the stock one and do it the right way and you will be much happier in the long run. I know waiting sucks but when your machine purrs and will run down $30,000 hogs life is good.

I would not be too concerned about this particular change to the wiring. A solenoid is just a really high current relay, and as such there really is only so may ways to hook it up. Two fat wires to the two big terminals and one from the start button and the other to ground through the clutch/neutral circuit. I'd do it if it were cheap enough, and I am a stickler for things like this, but I would include a diagram stuck to the inside of the left side cover if I were worried about it.

remember when i almost caught mbs? there is a thread about a certain '76 limited i wanted and how uncomfortable my couch is and being promised "no more promises" from the misses.

anyway, it worked!

it will look a lot better when it is all buttoned up. i put it on and it fired right up. there is some issues with the starter switch though. only works in certain spots. that will be investigated later. thanks for all your input. i now can ride!

You don't think I was housecleaning do you? I was just cleaning my fuel tank before painting.
I took my wife to dinner at a new restaurant to get points back. (after painting.)

A piece of 2 or 2.25" radiator hose off a car cut about 3" long or so and slipped over the solenoid and held on with a hose clamp or a couple of wire ties could offer some short circuit protection. It that is too thick I am thinking that a piece cut out of an old bicycle inner tube wrapped around it might offer enough protection.

Good thinking!
Tim, you really need to do something to insulate it all from the frame.
