Wingrider You are going to really enjoy the sound. I also had installed super trapp mufflers, and the combination gives a low growl like you have never heard before. It is amazing how the suggested intial setup, allowed me to fire it up and idle. Today I hope to get the carb balancing done and maybe a short ride.

Lefty Thanks for the coments, but before it could be considered for bike of the month it has to run as well as it looks. Today I started the balancing and final carb setup and noticed something, that I think is telling me that there is something not quite right. When checking air flow with the guage, cylinder #3 was lower than the rest. I tried to adjust it and I could here a air whistling noise when finished. I continued and could not bring the right side bank up as far as the air/fuel guage reading. I was looking for a reading of 13 and the right side stayed rich at around 10.5-11.0. The left side responded well to adjustements but not the right. Knowing that this bike has not been on the road for 6 or 7 years I thoght it might be a good idea to go for a run and check it when I came back. The bike is so strong that it is really hard to tell if there is a problem. But while driving the left side ran around 11.5- 13.5 and the right side stayed lower around 10.5-11.0. It was a treat to be back on the road again, the sound is awesome, and people do look. When I got home I checked the air flow rate into the #3 clylinder and it only reads 2 instead of 3 like the other cylinders. I pulled the plug out of #3 and it looks like it is burning well, however something is telling me I not there yet. Any ideas anyone. Maybe I should move this over to the unique carb conversation. What do you think? It is looking good though, here is a pic from this morning. Unfortunatly I have to go to work, but I am glad to have it running, and will continue tomorrow.

if the bike has sat for a while (and it sounds as if it has), then I would run the heck out of it before worrying too much about the cylinder. When sitting, its not uncommon for the rings to get a bit sticky, and not seal quite as well as they used to. Running the motor usually solves this in short order. Get a couple of hundred miles on it, run an MMO treatment in the oil, change the oil, and then see how it is running.

Thanks for all the good coments, I agree the bike needs to be ridden before it will settle in.(raining today) I did some reading and found something interesting. Weber only makes right hand carbs. In my dual setup, I am using one of these right hand carbs in the left hand position. This means that the hard stop and return spring are at the oppsite end from where my linkage is attached. Throttle shaft twist can throw off your balancing. This is the carb that I am having problems with. This is not a new problem for VW owners, just new to me. Working on it. Thanks Roady for the new pic. on my posts.

Well today was the day I was waiting for all winter. The day that my daughter and I could begin riding together. I am so glad that she talked me into getting the old bike going again. Our first ride went well and we are both looking forward to more.
