Well, I'm not sure if I have a problem or not. I've been off the bike for almost 2 weeks on a family vacation. I may just be listening too closely, but it seems strange.

My new to me, '83 GL 1100 std seems to have developed a gurgle/burble to the exhaust note just off idle when taking off from a stop. Hadn't noticed this before, and I don't know that it is affecting performance. I have recently synced the carbs. They took the sync well and the bike ran noticeably smoother after.

Then the bike got wet and fouled a plug (front left). I replaced my plug caps with new and replaced all the plugs. All looked to be burning slightly lean if anything, with the exception of the plug that had gotten wet. Bike started much more easily and ran pretty smooth. One ride later, I noticed the gurgling.

I've checked the plugs/wires and all looks good. I'm not sure where to go next. Seems to run pretty smoothly still, but it sounds funny. I checked the carb sync and they're still balanced at idle.

I replaced my timing belts and adjusted valve clearances before a recent 1000 mile trip. Synced the carbs after the trip, rode for a week or two then drowned a plug. Roughly 1500 miles since my new timing belts and valve adjust. Less than 300 since carb synch, less than 50 since new plugs and plug caps.

Any ideas?

I get that once in a while on my 1000. Sometimes it's the left side, and sometimes it's the right. Seems to last for a while and then go away, or change sides. It just loses that "crisp clean" exhaust note. It hasn't affected the way the bike runs, it just sounds different sometimes.
I gave up on trying to figure it out. Maybe it's a fuel thing, or we're listening too close.

I was doing more listening on the way to work this morning. Seems like the issue clears up once the bike gets all the way warmed up. This occurs about 5-6 miles into my 8 mile commute! Bike does seem to idle about 100 rpm low when it's cold. Don't know if that's normal or not.

Runs well, idles nicely once warm, but I'm just not barely getting it warmed up with my short trip to the office.

Unless somebody else chimes in, I'm going to ride it as is, re-check my valve clearances soon, and not worry.

Not sure about the noise but my 76 idles low. 800 rpms, when it is cold. When it warms up it idles around 1000 rpms.
