what kind of paint did you use?

The Brand is Spies Hecker Permahyd. It's their waterborn basecoat line. I would have used Glasurit, but they dont have a formula for GM Atomic orange pearl in 90 line, which is Glasurit's waterborn paint.

So I got the framing for the bottom of the tail tack welded (barely, my welder is out of gas). So tomorrow I'll reweld with one of the big welders at the shop and they i'll be ready to cut sheet stock and tack them to framing and have a base for the tail to work off of.

Pics tomorrow!

Okay...... Started on the seat/tail on sunday. Went to start tackwelding the bar stock together that i'm making the framing of the tail out of and realized i have no welding gas. Will get some this week.

But managed to get this bracket removed...
Image
I was able to just splatter weldthe bottom section of the tail frame together but it's ugly. I'll clean up the welds at work and snap some pics off.

But as i promised, the shelter will be finished by friday. And the Honda vinyl came in today.

So i got it all sanded down and the vinyl applied, and finished it off with silver pinstripping.

And now it's time for clear

And the main section of the shelter is now done! Aside from some light sanding and polishing.

Time to start on finishing up the mono door....

This bracket that is the remains of the lower doors hinge had to be removed.

And that's where i had to call it a day. I'll get the bottom of the monodoor all preped and the entire door primed tomorrow. Then looking at paint on thursday and assembly of the entire shelter on friday!

That shelter is a jewel, man! Wishing I had half your skilz. :orange

But, you have inspired me. I'm adding bags to my nekkid gal and acquired some ruff ones. I don't want any lights on them, just smooth all around so I had to cut out and fill the gap at the lower rear. Never having dabbled in body work of any kind I had enlisted a buddy (who's dabbled a little) to patch them for me. After watching this thread, and learning a whole bunch from you, I decided to tackle it myself.

I taped a "custom" backer plate into the hole ....

Image

... schmeared in the kitty hair ...

Image

... and rough sanded them off with my palm sander.

Image

It wasn't near as hard as I'd built it up to be. All that was finished in about 3 hours. Now, I'm off to get some of that Glazing Putty to try my hand at the next step.

Like I said, "Wishing I had half your skilz," because I'm really dreading the painting phase. :-?

More pics, here.

BEFORE YOU START GLAZING carefully pull that backing panel off and go get yourself some fiberglass mat and resin/hardener. San the inside of the bags and apply the glass to the kittyhair and surrounding area. That will pretty much guarentee that the kittyhair will stay in place and never crack.

And I'd definitely jump at the offer.

As it is, I'm going with NAPA camera-matched paint supplied as single stage in rattle cans. I'm only doing the new bags and one side cover. Crossing my fingers on that.

(I'm much more able with the wrenches.)

I'm guessing that's because the kitty hair is kind of soft, it did sand down pretty easy.

So I lied before in that post when I said that I'd never, ever done any body work. About 8 years ago I repaired a crack in the fairing on my FZ1. Bought a fiberglass kit and did a small patch. I still have the kit and opened it up today to find that it was all in good shape.

I sanded the inside of the bag, cut pieces of the cloth to size, mixed up the resin and hardener and did a bang up glassing job on both bags. It's a good thing that this is the inside of the bag.

Well Kitty Hair is good for filling holes and gaps, but only to a point. I'd say the max size hole to fill without butting fiberglass on the back side would be about the size of a quarter. But as far as the inside being ugly, nothing putty and sandpaper can't fix.

I can't remember who asked how i was gonna be able to get the big main seal for the Monodoor in the Shelter with it all being 1 piece now. Well it is doable.... just be verrrrrrrrrrryyyyyy careful.

And i got the MonoDoor primed so that means Flat black thursday night and full Shelter reassembly friday/saturday!

Great work on your project.

Where did you find those Honda decals? I'm looking for something like them.

Thanks!

Hey guys. Sorry for the lack of updating! I got the shelter finished, FINALLY. Then last friday at hockey practice, one of the goalies took a cheap shoot at me and took my legs out from under me. Upon hitting the ice I aparently gave myself a Level 1 AC Tear in my right shoulder. So the injury, coupled with the fact that I am also doing a full restoration on my uncles Triumpt T120 tank I havent been able to put in a ton of time into the tail/seat section I have decided to make.

Pics of the tail will come as soon as I get the base plate all welded and mounted to the frame.

But until then, here is some Shelter porn.... finally finished.

I'm gonna try to get my uncles tank finished this week, then i can go and put in a week on the tail/seat. Still trying to find a local NGW member to help me get the frame stripped down. Hopefully one of you guys can help me out, sense i'm all gimpy.

Wow, love the details that went into this shelter. Outstanding work.

Motorcycle restoration is our hobby and we pay for that. But in the end of wrenching, the bikes are free!
