hopefully just a broke valve, it may be the valve just stuck and it wasn't the belt. always hard to know with an old sitting engine

Yeah, zero clearance.

That's the thing the belt was new and it doesn't look like it slipped, but I wasn't the one who replaced it so who knows.

I got it apart and the valve actually beat into the piston and broke off.

Good news: The cylinder wall is unaffected and my engine is in better shape than I thought it was. When I removed the head the motor turned over with the starter.

Bad news: I need a new head (too marred) and two new pistons. I don't know if the belt just slipped on that side and both values where out or the cam couldn't move after the one value was sticking and beat into the piston.

Either way thank God it is savable, I kinda like this motorcycle and would like to ride it.

Any idea of where to get parts?

Welcome to NGW, bad news about the motor. You might look for a replacement engine. I haven't split the cases on one but I hear people are doing it a little more often now.

Well, time for some good news.

I bought another 1975 gl1000, it's in pretty good shape. It runs, just needs some stuff adjusted, for it to fit me better.

I also got an engine that is in way better shape, so now I have enough parts to fix the other motorcycle.
