(NOTE, 5/1/2012): This started as a "keep my hands busy cuz I'm quitting smoking" build. That lasted about 9 months and then I got back at it. :IDTS: )

I have this brand new '80 GL1100 sitting here, ready to put together. It's NOS, direct from China.

First chore was to take one of Winnie's side-covers down to Advance Auto Parts and find a similar paint.

Image

Not too bad a match and I spent all of $6 to kick off this build.

It seems a shame to open a vintage, 30-year-old kit. But then I wouldn't end up with a cool accessory then, would I?

Image

First look through the included "manual" and I see that there are some missing parts. No plug wires or radiator hoses. NAPA doesn't stock these so I'll need to get creative.

Image

You knew there would be handy pointers, dinch'ya?

Be sure to post a seat mod thread for the bike when you are done building this.
Might I suggest single strands of telephone wire for the plug wires (you could use the yellow or the black conductors,) and maybe the insulation from thick black wire for the radiator hoses?

Congratulations Roady, keep at it, you will start feeling better. I talk with people at my pulmonary rehab all the time that have stopped smoking and they all feel better. The craving is still present for awhile but it can be done. They also said that sugar free gum helped a lot.
Keep at it and good luck :-D

Put the $$ in your 'Road Trip' jar.

I'll buy you a beer at the Gap if you're still clean.

Hey Whiskerfish, good for you too. I know what you mean about the excercise, when I started rehab my lower legs ached for a couple weeks. Keep at it and here's wishing you the best :-D

he he he

I quit once in about 85. After 3 days I came into my office at work and there was a carton of smokes from the guys that worked for me. It said "Please start smoking again"!! I did

That's what I use. Heat shrink tubing slipped over the plastic crap from the kit, carefully warmed with a blow dryer would make realistic radiator hoses.

Just to give you guys some encouragement, I quit cold turkey in 1979 with an almost 3 pack a day habit. After about 6 months I stopped craving one except in certain situations, like drinkin a beer. But I realized it wasn't really a craving but the association of smoking and drinking a beer at the same time kicking in. A couple of years after that and I stopped craving them at all. Now, I can hardly stand being around cigarette smoke.

Good luck to all of you who are trying to quit. You will definitely feel better shortly.

One of my friends decided to quit by smoking a joint every time he wanted a cigarette. Good thing we were in college and he didn't have a job because he was mostly comatose for some time. The good part is that he still doesn't smoke cigarettes.....

Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it thousands of times! Or, try this one.

I don't smoke! The cigarette smokes...... I'm just the sucker!

Or, I absolutely refuse to be a quitter.

Never mind me. I'll admit it.... I'm weak.

Keep up the good work.

Steve and Steve, keep it up. I too quit many years ago. Ran out of money and smokes on the same day and it seemed like a great time to stop. Hey Roady, swap meet in Collinsville this Saturday. I'm going to look for a tire for the Silverwing and maybe some other items. $5 admission at the Fireman's Hall, 9520 Collinsville Rd.
