Valve Grinding

#1

Post by Victour »

I used to work in a automotive machine shop 100 years ago I milled heads polished cranks and did valves and seats ok it was in 72 .

I heard one time that you can buy the stones all ready cut to the right angles..I really don't know where I want to take it in town and would rather do them myself.. the intakes Seats are pitted a little because the 2nd PO let rain get into the intake.. all he had to do was put the cover back on and saved me a big head ache.. the valves themselves are fine just need lapped . the seats can be replaced if need be.. maybe I could go to a little larger VW valve.lol

I hear that these valves are hardened and they should not be ground, only lapped. Don't know about the seats, but it would make sense if they were hardened also.

Someone will come along soon with a definitive answer!

Kind of makes you wonder if they are only surface hardened or if Honda just wanted to sell you new valves. There have always been a fair number of rebuilt component failures and a lot of manufacturers avoid rebuilding now, the only way to tell wound be to grind one and check the harness, perhaps with a Rockwell machine.
I've also heard not to grind them several times now.

The way I understand it is that the valves and seats have a material coating (stellite?? is the word that comes to mind??) that precludes the grinding operation. I believe I have read or been told that this was a preventative measure against burn't valves. Seems to work as you do not hear about burnt valves very often and we have folks screwing with the tunning all the time.

The valves have a Stellite coating on them for hardening this is true. It is so the valves can be lighter. That is important for the high RPMs

The seats can be ground has it states in the manual. You need 3 degree angles 63.5, 45 and 37.5. The three angles are used to move the 45 needed for the valve seat to the middle. There are 3 angles for better flow across the seat(where the valve actually sets on the seat).

You can use blueing to tell which way the seat needs to move and then make the correct cut to move it up or down. Lap after cuts, do not lap with seal in place.

Make sure you check for leaks when done. I like to assemble the valve and spray contact cleaner in the port and watch for leaks. This helps you know that it will be good before assembly of head to cases.
