Thinking about going to a single or a dual carb system to maybe cut down on frustration. I see that a lot of single carb manifolds are heated, how important or necessary is that living south of I-40?

not much at all probably....there are many who have great setups that are not heated

Thanks for the reply, another question I forgot to mention earlier is which carb would be better suited for this application. One guy posted recently about useing the Weber 32/36 and cycle innovations I believe used a holly single barrel. Don't know if the weber was chosen through test or because it was available and cheap.
It is clear I have no idea what I'm doing and certainly no mechanic so any insight would be helpful.

most go for the weber ...im thinling the best is the 28 36 ....32 36 is popular to ...most single barrel carbs are realy to small and lite on the topend ....the webers are progressive linkage and work well down low and on top end

i have the weber 32/36 dgv on 2 of my wings both on heated manifolds u made up

cold startup is awesome mileage is better than stock they idle smooth at 1009-1100 with no chain rattle

however throttle response takes some getting used to they

cruise great but have a huge flat spot between cruise and wide open till the second barrel kicks in

i have picked up the carbs at flea markets for 15-20 dollars

and rebuild kits are only 15 bucks including accel pump and float needle and seat

the mods i need to do to the varb are easy and jets are plentiful and cheap to get

i have one on my daily rider and it works very well and is easy to set and adjust

I'm going to be doing this also, I'm not a fan of the 4 Keihins. I understand that you get probably the best performance out of them, but the headache associated with them is counterproductive to me.

How's that "flat spot?" almost like no throttle then a surge of power?

the 28 36 weber progressive linkaged com in faster on this carb making the transition sooner and smoother and less flat spot

I'm running a 34/32(Italian)Weber on my '75. Been doing fine for several years, non-heated. It will idle at 1K easily. As for Holley carbs, I think they are good for sucking lots of gas, but that's about it. One can go overboard on carb size and it won't make the motor run any better.

im running sigle barril weber it runs all rigt but the performace is bad . To mi it dont mean too much The Venezuelan roads is not made for fast runners. I made mi 90 to 100 mph several times but i am a 70 mph guy. I used long time to fix the timing to the best point. If you se the timing wheel mine are now igniting about a half of an inch before the point. The old lady dont run hot even wee are 2 with lugages wee live in the tropics mi bike is a 79

Well I did go with a single Weber 32/36.
HOTT-- builder of the bike of the year and OLE SPARKY 83 fame made a manifold, looks just like the one in his shade tree thread, might be the same one dunno.
Had some difficulty with the idle after a short run at first but that was resolved with float adjustment, for some reason the float level was 3mm out of spec from the factory.

Now the great part is that it is a whole new world performance wise, had no idea this thing was cappable of this level of peformance as in actual acceleration. Point is I could not be happier.
