84 GL1200A dash redo

#1

Post by FargoFour »

I picked up an 84 Aspencade. Been sitting for at least 10 years. Has a bad stator which I'm taking care of. Also had to do a Randakk carb rebuild and go through the calipers and master cylinders. Also will replace the belts.

One thing was the radio. As cool as it is I really don't plan on buying any new cassettes. So I took it out and put this in its place. It's 1/8" aluminum. Not sure yet if I should go this route or plastic, for glare reasons

Any comments or ideas?

Give it a quick shot of any black finish of your choice and the possible glare is gone.

I was expecting wood. Looks good.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

There will be a certain time of day, on a certain heading, that you will hate that glare. That much is certain. Paint it black.

Personally, I love turned aluminum. Buy a spray can of 'matte' finish clear. That will cut the shine down considerably, and still keep the look. My 2 cents...

I'd make it into a pocket where you could slip sunglasses, stuff a glove while riding, throw in change, tater tots and other sundries.

I love engine turning too...but agree on the glare. If I had a piece of real estate like that work with, I'd be looking to put a couple gauges or some switches or something in there...just a thought.

I agree. Did something similar with my 1200. Flat black panel, and two gauges. Volt and oil pressure

Hmm, wood. That's an idea I'll have to try. I was thinking of a voltmeter, USB plug, and maybe a clock. It's not that hard to remove so I might make a couple and see what works. Or maybe I can have an intern dash and a trading dash.

Thanks for the ideas!

Bud.
