76 LTD-#5961-period correct resto-refurb. H
Hi friends,
So I finally made up my mind, after selling my 82 and getting quasi straightened out, of which way to go with this...
http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ve#p502483
(Mods: is it possible to merge the above thread with this one?....if not, no big deal...)
It may be for sale when completed, but like everything i ever built, I am building it for me, as i would want it if i keep it.
....so after looking at it for a couple years, I've fallen in love with that funky old faring and decided to keep it and the bags on the bike. The plan is to make it mechanically perfect, period correct accessories, upgrade cheesy Bates bag mounts and any other "universal mount" type junk from the aftermarket, and just generally make it look as cool as it can be. My goal is NOT to make an old school full on garbage wagon, but rather a not too junky , cleanly styled bagger that accentuates the beauty of the old wing and the cool fairing and bits.
I'll put a couple of pics from the other thread in case you can't merge the threads, then some pics of work i did about a year or so ago on the bars, bags, and fairing....after those pics the rest will be current and posted as i go....(don't let your popcorn get stale as you follow along....there may be $interruptions$ as we progress.
As I'm not crazy about typing, this will be mostly pics...I'll answer any questions as time permits. Thanks, Dave.

these pics are from about a year ago...i had some time so i decided to get the fairing, bags, crash bars and handlebars "right"........(please note, "right"=right for me)..........the fairing had a slightly wrong tilt....the bates bag mounts, jeez!!,what a cluster!,so i modified some stock 80-82 rear bars, way WAY better,IMO....also didn't like the style of c-bar on the motor so i made the front ones out of some 80-82 shin-busters. Made the main fairing mount into a two piece bolt together deal..WAY easier to remove-install....put on Daytona bars, with pin holes and correct internal wiring.

Re: 76 LTD-#5961-period correct resto-refurb. H
In case anyone was wondering...I have all the stock stuff for this bike..I just don't like the look or feel of Honda's stock bars and mirrors. They just don't look "right" to me...too bucko and spindly for my taste...plus i'm 6'4".
The grab rail was missing..it had a rack/sissy bar, but i don't need it or like the look...so i put on a stock rail i had from my 77...much better...
I guess i'm a bit of a styling fascist, but the silhouette matters....that first glance that turns the head..the sleek line.....you know, sometimes it's hard when you got both an artist and a pragmatist living in your head..( I'm schizophrenic and so am I !)

Re: 76 LTD-#5961-period correct resto-refurb. H
So....after getting the accessories "right", i decided, since my regular work has occasional gaps, i would do this job backwards...instead of tearing the whole thing apart and fix/restore things as they go back together, i would take a part off, restore it, bag it and put it upstairs.
Over the last year or so i did the exhaust (pretty nice muffler, but messed up inlets), radiator, wheels, shocks, forks ( off another parts bike w 12k miles), head bearings, front wheel bearings, pulled, cleaned and painted the gas tank and bat box. The frame was pretty nice under the crud so i opted not to paint it just a total clean and minor touch ups.
I also put fork boots on it...i always wondered why Honda didn't put them on stock? ( one of the legs i swapped out was pitted and leaking ...) The boots are for K model/early XL Harley's, JP cycle has them...I wrap the fork tube , right under the tree, with about a 1/2 wide strip of rubber .060 thick, butted, one layer thick( use some glue to temporarily hold it)...this will make the fork tube dia. just fit the small end of the boot. Put on a tie wrap and the top is on.
On the bottom I found some big o-rings ( .100" thick) maybe a 1/4" smaller than the top leg dia. and put two on each fork leg in the grooves at the top...this gets the O.D. of the top of the leg right on size with the I.D. of the big end of the boot...you might need a little light grease to work the boots over the o-rings without displacing them. If you have your legs dropped a little you won't need a tie wrap at the bottom of the boot, it will hold the o-rings if its not pulling up on the boot at full extension. On this one I needed the tie wraps. ALSO use a hole punch or just snip a small chunk out of an inconspicuous spot so the boot can breath. Downsides...can't do it this way with certain fork braces, and you should pull them off the leg and keep the leg top clean( the set i put on my 77 got ignored for 2 years and had a little corrosion in between the o-rings)........anyway...I'm talking too much, so
Here's some more pics....NOT in chronological...or even logical order...some before shots of the cruddy motor first
