Sweet!! Just got a set if KONI shocks on eBay for $30. They were victims of hurricane sandy, so fingers crossed their in rebuild able shape!! They looked decent, but should be a great upgrade and hopefully cheaper than a set of new shocks. Regardless they'll be a better quality and higher performance shock than Hagons as long as they're not too ruined. The video of the bike seemed to be promising:

Got the shocks in. The look to be in pretty darn good shape for what they are. I'm still going to rebuild them though as I don't want to trust only what I can see. Parts should be around $50, tool rental should be another $40 or so, all from IKON north america.

All in all, I should be in the set for about $130 or so, which is still cheaper than the less adjustable Hagon's and less than half of a new set of IKON's. Woooo!

I saw those shocks on ebay. I asked the seller a question. The answer was good...so I went to "buy it now" but the listing was gone. You got em. Grrr I wanted em. Super deal on a pair of rebuildable shocks. Lucky you. action1

So inspected the frame on the '76, looks like I'm in good shape on all the problematic sections (ie no frame rust on centerstand, side stand, removable frame section, etc.), so that's a relief!

Also noticed there's quite a good amount of oil on the bottom side of the motor. what is a common leak for down there? i haven't performed any real testing yet, so i can't answer to leakdown or compression testing numbers. does anyone have any advice for where I should look? maybe some common leaks or mandatory seals to replace? I don't really want to remove the motor, but if I have to, i will.

Typical leaks are valve covers (and the bolt grommets), shifter shaft, cam seals, tach cable at the fuel pump, among others. To narrow it down you need to clean it all up and inspect closely when you've had it running.

so what all oil seals can be replaced without removing the motor? I'd like to inspect for signs of oil seepage and replace before getting the motor running. oil seals are cheap and my time is "free", so it's worth it to be proactive.

Roady says it all. You can do all these without removing the engine.

Oh yeah, you can also replace the output shaft seal, with a bit of fiddling with the drive shaft and rubber boot. Plus the O rings on the water pipes, thermostat housing and water pump cover.

You cannot entirely block off the fuel pump hole, or you will lose your tach cable mount. Your tach cable mounts into the fuel pump. I was running an electric pump for a couple years, one of those Mr gasket ones. I had it hidden under my right side shelter cover. Just reverted back to the mechanical pump this year.

Just curious, why do you want to run an electric pump?

when i was considering building up the '75, the fuel pump on that was in pretty bad shape so i was thinking of the electric pump. My friend was going to shave down the cover to still incorporate the tach, but look smoother. Now that I've decided to build up the '76, I believe I'll use the pump that's on there. I have the new diaphragm i need in case it leaks.

why did you switch back to the mechanical?
