Post by BobManifold »

Here she is, FINISHED! almost ready to go Kick Some BUTT on the ice!! Just need ice!
Having screwed up ice tires before on my workshop floor, the wheels with the ice tires will be put on only when the rig is on the ice.

Brief Summary:
* 81 GL1100
* ~17k miles from new.
* Laid up since 1991 (Fresh Blue Tarp every 5 years)
* Seized solid when brought home in May
* Running a day later
* Carbs cleaned and she runs like a Honda!
* CR500 21" front wheel, No Brake. Front lever operates rear disk
* Straight pipes
* Home conceived & built sidecar
* Frugally built from bits & pieces lying around
* 'High End' Rattle Can Pint Job

So, She needs a Moniker...... Suggestions?????]

Current Favorite - The Black Pig
(Sidecar Bob - Do you know the British TV/Radio series reference :-D )

If we get enough suggestions I may run a Poll

You want to test it on ice? Bring it to Calgary and try it out on my driveway.

I am also waiting on some videos of any any races you have this season. :popcorn:

I have my Ice tires all set up and ready to go.
I am keeping them under wraps until the racing begins to maintain a competitive edge.
Needless to say, they would certainly Hacksaw through flesh quite easily.

When I was a lad back in Dear Old Blighty, I spent some time as a passenger on a Grasstrack Sidecar. I fondly look back to that time as 'Character Building'. I have had it out in my field on the knobby tires and it works quite well and sounds amazing. Getting it on the ice will hopefully be better.
I drew a lot of ideas in this rig from that racing experience and current grasstrack and speedway sidecar designs. If the Black Pig works reasonably well, I have some ideas to make it far more like the modern versions seen on grasstracks and speedways.
Until then anim-cheers1 anim-cheers1 anim-cheers1

Re: Ice Racing Sidecar Project - CALL OUT for Steering Head

#14

Post by BobManifold »

OK, so its three years later and we have had no ice worth talking about for years.
I did get out on a lake and proved that:
1. Holy cow! Its fast! I only got it into third once and everything became a blur!
2. Its still heavy - even though we have taken everything off, its still a Lump
3. With the stock fork Geometry its a pig to steer.

This last weekend we got out on a real racetrack with real competition. Its still fast, but its still a pig to steer, even worse than before as I went back to standard trail as the front wheel was unwieghted by the axle being moved forward. I need to change the geometry.
I ended up totally exhausted as I improved the front end grip from initially chattering sideways (disconcerting at speed) to gripping but snapping back to straight due to the excessive lead with the stock geometry. At the end of 10 laps my arms were screaming with pain, and I had to drink to take the pain away anim-cheers1 anim-cheers1 anim-cheers1 anim-cheers1

So a Call Out to all you NGW nuts for someone who has an old or damaged 81-ish frame laying around.... I need the steering head cut off a frame so I can change the steering angle without chopping and weakening my frame, and also so I can reuse the fork yokes and bearings and not have to scratch around for matching inner and outer races in the SKF catalog.

Can anyone help?
