Refills aren't cheap either but yes, worth it. It is time consuming if you do very many. I've had to do all 16 on a carb rack before. :IDTS:

Thanks guys, I will be looking into these Time-Serts for sure.

I ran a coat of Loctite 401 over the white buttons atop the carbs to seal any possibly leaks, fitted the "O" rings and the badges after the glue set.

Messed with the wiring for the headlight relays and fitted a blade fuse holder, also sorted the hand controls out, just have to heat shrink the wires now to make them look neat.

Fitted the carbs for the last time I hope.

All the best, peter.

G'day to Everyone! :-D

today I am not happy :(

Took the sidecar out for a spin this morning since I installed the correct Dyna ignition and have not test rid her yet.

Took some effort to start her but eventually after half a dozen tries she fired up :-D she popped and farted lots but eventually she warmed up and off I went :)

after a few kilometres she had warmed up to proper operating temperature and above about 2500 rpm she was perfect, powerful and smooth but under 2500 rpm she farted around a fair bit especially on take off :-?

Had to meet Mum and my Sister in the city for lunch, and Yes! I ate tooooo much :P

got home at a reasonable hour so I decided to take the sidecar out for another spin, but I wound out the fuel mixture screws 1/4 turn each before I started her.

at first she was shaky as before but when warmed up and after a couple of 1/2 throttle openings she started to run badly, so I pulled over on the side of the road and screwed the mixture screws back in 1/4 a turn each, That should fix it! Wrong!, it made it worse and I only just got home popping, farting and banging all the way. :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

.........................

Autopsy in my mind.

when I unscrewed the fuel mixture screws I felt that the brass screw was being cut out by the after market springs that I used, but only grimaced and paid it no more thought :|

My gut feeling is that this action created Brass swarf that eventually worked its way down to the needle end and partially blocking the orifice, thus starving me of fuel. :?:

Well tomorrow I am heading down to Bunbury on the 15, a 200km journey each way to pick up a pair of really old Bakelite telephones that the lady at the museum wants fixt.

but on Saturday I will pull the plugs and carbs form the outfit and carefully check out my theory, but the boat has to come off first which is lots of mucking about, but that's the fun of modifying and bringing back to life old Ladies dancr

Happy & Safe riding to Everyone! anim-cheers1

Well Folks! my suspicions were correct, so now I have to strip the carbs and wash and blow the crap out of them with compressed air.

I hope others will learn from my mistake and use the OEM springs, no matter how bad they look.

The aftermarket springs are cut off squarely and have a sharp edge ready to slice into the shoulder of the needle thus producing swarf which will eventually block things up. :x

The OEM ones are ground down flat after cutting so there is practically no cutting edge to munch into your needles. :-D

I generally buy the carbie overhaul kits for the gaskets and O rings, why change the brassware if not damaged, so I had some spares and I took the springs out of the #5 carbs which are a long way from being needed.

Happy and Safe Riding to All that can. Peter.

G'day to All,

well I finally ended up putting a good set of used OEM (I think) mixture screws in, fired her up expecting a big improvement :)

Wrong! :( the improvement was minor, still missing at low to medium revs and spluttering a lot :x

I decided to put a set of brand new plugs in, but very little difference again. Something is not right :-?

did about 20 Km and had enough, let her cool down a bit and pulled the plugs

All sooty, obviously toooo rich. But why :-?

3 things come to mind.........(1) the needles that I machined down to lift them the same as a standard 78 :-? ..... (2)the needle & seat is not as it should be, but I set the floats and double checked them twice :-? , but I am going to replace them anyway........... (3) the tubes above the slow jet are the incorrect ones, I noticed some have 4 holes and some 5 holes, so which ones are the correct for a 78 ~ 769A carb body :-?

Getting a bit cheesed off with her at the moment so I might just take the Valky out to burn some fuel.

Happy and Safe Riding to All, Peter.

G'day Folks :-D

Well my hunch about the tubes was correct and many, many thanks to "ericheath" for pointing out the way (I would never have found It).

The "Emulsion Tubes" for Main and Slow jets are different for the 75~76 to the 77~79, and I had them all completely wrong.

So I stripped my #1 & #2 projects down and have the crabs sitting on the bench next to each other ready for my next break to correct all my errors.

I feel so stupid for making such a major mistake, but this group is absolutely fantastic for guiding the way to recovery anim-cheers1

As I stated earlier I went for a ride on the Valky this arvo, but silly me did not put on any sunblock so my face got burnt real good (bad) I am going to have trouble sleeping tonight especially if I have to put my face down on a pillow :( then I have to turn up to work tomorrow looking like a freak, or should I say "A real freak" ( I am a freak anyway  )

I have had several "Wooblas" ( Aboriginal for Drinks) so I am feeling Good and Numb! anim-cheers1 dancr anim-cheers1

Back to Prison tomorrow for 8 days, but I have bought the correct Emulsion Tubes on e-Bay and hopefully they will arrive next break :-D , as I am dying to take my outfit for a decent ride without the threat of pushing her all the way home. :(

Happy & Safe Riding (or dreaming of) for All, peter.

G'day to Everyone! :-D

Yesterday I stripped my carbs down and swapped all the needles and emulsion tubes around so now they are correct, just waiting for my #62 drill bits to arrive to make the "Off idle hesitation" modification for the 75's and one four hole emulsion tube for my 78's (I only have 3 of them).

My 75 carbs had them horrible little springs under the mixture screws, and fortunately I hadn't screwed them in so I set up a drill chuck in the lathe and ground them flat, then a quick touch on the wire brush and in they went.

Not sure what today will bring, I just feel like laying down on the workshop lounge sucking a few Wobbly Pops anim-cheers1

G'day to All,

Well it has been a frustrating week at home, but achievements have been made. :( :) :-D :) :( :) :-D :-D :-D

Got my 4 hole emulsion tube in the mail and fitted all things correctly in the carbs, assembled the lot again, took her for a test ride, and WOW!, what a difference the correct parts made, but my smile drooped quickly as when she warmed up after a couple of Kilometres she started to break down, I zipped home immediately. :( :-? :x

What the ??? ........ then I remembered reading the Dyna ignition instructions and if the coils are 3 Ohm or more you can dispense with the Ballast Resistor, my GL-1500 coils measured in at 3 Ohm (plus the 1.5 Ohms of the test leads) I compared them to the Dyna coils I have for my #5 project and they were the same, so the Ballast Resistor found a new home in the trash bin..

Ok! ... fit the Ballast Resistor and see what difference if any it makes? ............. If I can find it :-? ........... Found it! :-D ................. Oh boy it did make a difference action1

So I put the rest of the fairing on so she is not "Naked" anymore and zipped down to see my Mum to show off dancr

When I got there I did a quick once over and the final drive was hot enough to fry an egg on  :( :-?

Oh well she comes apart and I will have to put a thinner shim in her (or buy another and clean her up). She is blowing a little smoke and I am kicking myself for not putting new rings in her when she was down. The Neutral switch only just flickers, I had pulled it apart and cleaned it up, maybe I just put the wrong sized "O" ring on it so the switch is in the wrong position??? I also have a feeling the fan switch does not work as it never comes on, no matter what the temp gauge says. (never checked it).

But I am happy with the way she handles, a but gutless but I guess that's because I am used to my 1500 and the Valky. crossy.gif

Once I have finished pulling her apart and back together a few dozen more times to fix little things, and when she is running sweet I will get her painted the same GoldWing Red and get new windshields for the fairing and chair, and get the seat re-upholstered.

I guess this will take another 12 months or so, but you "Cant rush good magic" Plus I am also working on my #1 and keeping the 1500 and Valky on the road.

Happy & Safe Riding to Everyone! Peter.

Looking good. O ring should be 18 x 3, I know because I put the wrong one in my '78 a couple of weeks ago. Too thin, leaked oil.
