My Preservation restoration
I've owned this bike for about 10 years now and only paied $200.00 dollars for it. Three years ago I desided to do what I'll call a "Preservation Restoration". This is what I ended up with.
I'll tell the whole story after I get all my pictures all sorted out and a bit of a story going.
I still have a few minor things to sort out but it runs, sounds good and goes down the road straight.
Dave
It's a 1975

Re: My Preservation restoration
Wait a minute. Did you leave a "0" out of the paid for price? That's a real steal!

Re: My Preservation restoration
No, I didn't leave an "0" out of the price But I've added a few "000's" to the built total.
It's been a fun project, I spent more money that I care to admit but it was well worth it.

Re: My Preservation restoration
The next thing I did was to adjust the valves, new timing belts, valve cover, and timing belt cover gaskets.
I cleaned up the valve covers, timing belt covers and everything inside the timing belt area.
Next I worked on the wireing harness, I cleaned it up like new, replaced some of the wrapings and cleaned every terminal end with a brass wire brush and the female ones with a tiny brass bottle brush. I replaced the stator plug with the kit from Origon Motorcycle Parts it is a exact replacement.
Don't know how that happened but the picture is up side down.

She turned out real nice. Yep, the bought-it price is not anywhere near the finished price, is it?

Re: My Preservation restoration
No not even close, I'm into it well over three grand. The big ticket items were the original seat, exhaust, headers and of corse the grab rail.Roady wrote:She turned out real nice. Yep, the bought-it price is not anywhere near the finished price, is it?
I still have to sort out a few issues, like the 7 volt system for fuel and water temp, and last night I was syncing the carbs and I found out the fan is not comming on I know the fan motor works so it must be the sensors or something.

Re: My Preservation restoration
Got the raidaitor and all its bits sorted out cleaned up and assembled, put the wireing harness, coils and the raidiator assembly on the bike.
I bought all new cables, new thermostat, gasket kit, adjusted the clutch inside the back cover.

Well the 7 volt regulator is good, replaced fuel float sender with a good one but still no reading on the fuel gauge. Not sure on the temp gauge yet I have to start it up again and still have to sort out the radiator fan switch.

Re: My Preservation restoration
First thing on the fan switch is to pull the connector off and jumper across it. If the fan runs then you can move on to checking the switch. It can be rebuilt if you're so inclined.

That is a great tip Roady, I'll try that first before draining the coolant and switching it out. It's a good thing my 77 Wing is a long term project because I've been stealing parts off it to try on the 75.
Thanks,

Re: My Preservation restoration
Off topic, but I guess the 75's didn't have a support tube at the midpoint of the upper tube behind the false tank frame??? I'm referring to the tube that is cut a bit to change the rake ala HOTT. My 77's have them as do the other years.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: My Preservation restoration
It is a beautiful bike and worth the cost of restoration. Wish I could find one that nice for $200 even if it takes $3000 to bring it back to health.
Bikes at present:
83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process
