My 77 project that will turn into a cafe racer/ Bobber with a kick
Hey All,
Well, I finally got myself another 1000...so the 78 with the car, and my 1800 will have some more company. Picked up a 77 from a member on here...he looks a lot, but doesn't post much. Heck of a nice guy, and he had this parts machine sitting around, saw my want ad, and as the rest, they say is history.
From what I can tell, she is mostly there...he took a few parts off for his 75, so the most immediate pieces I need to get are a starter block for the right side of the handlebars, and the full setup for the points...his electronics burnt out, so he took these.
The carbs are almost totally apart, and I see an order going to Randakk for a rebuild kit. There are no brakes at the moment, so a bit of rebuilding is in order, as well as a general going over to see what needs help. He was smart enough to try something on this bike before he did it to his 75, so I need to be sure everything got done right, and is back together with proper torque...many things are just on finger tight, or nuts just started.
The plan for this little girl is to make a cafe racer out of her, and as time and money allows, I am going to supercharge it...dual superchargers in fact.
I am also going to paint her up, and have a tribute to my deceased grandpa who flew in a B-25 in WWII. His rig was nicknamed "the Witches Switch" and had a nice lookin' lady using a broom painted on the planes nose. So, we are going to recreate her, and adorn her on the shelter...maybe she'll have parts on other panels as well.
My grandpa started riding for certain in WWII, (maybe earlier) and through out the years, he kept riding...and ever since, every generation continues the tradition.
For now, I am simply going to get her running, and then park it for the winter until a couple more projects get done. Now I just need to decide if I go with the point, or if I put a little electronic magic in her. Here are a couple pictures of how she sits, as I know you guys like pictures.
And here is all the stuff it had with it...the truck was full, box and back seat! Anyone looking for a set of Bates bags? I didn't figure anyone wanted to see the Vetter fairing, but it has one of them too!
Thanks for looking! I'll be sure to update as I go.

The Bates bags will sell good, looks like a nice set. Interesting project, looking forward to the build.

Darn right it was... I'm not a red type of person, but the wife tends to like it. Wheeled it into the garage, and immediately she says it's not the "right" red.
Looking at the back of the shelter panels, it would appear that it Was red back in 77, but somewhere along the line, it got real red.

That is a good question...I was going to get a set of used AMR300's and go from there, but I recently found out that my Dad sometimes works with a guy that builds superchargers on the side.
So, I may find out what he would charge me to custom build a set of small blowers, and go from there. At this point, I don't know what he makes, or what he charges... All I do know is the cars he puts them on really scoot.

My thoughts too! I've met the guy a couple times when I was down on site, and you never would have guessed he's a "car" guy. Hopefully he'll like my project enough to give me a good price, and I can get his name out for him.

Re: My 77 project that will turn into a supercharged cafe ra
Well, figured a little update is in order...doubled the price of the bike today. Randakk will be sending among other things, a carb rebuild, upgraded master cylinder, and a set of grips to throw on a different set of handlebars I have laying around.
The carbs are completely split, and are soaking in some of Napa's finest carb dip, and I am trying to source a front brake upgrade, or at the very least, pistons and rebuild kits for the current piston-less calipers, as well as all new cables.
If I can get the airbox from the prev. owner, maybe we can get her together to try and run.

Thanks! I hope to excede even my expectations on this project.trevor42 wrote:You had me at two superchargers!

I decided to take a small turn for the interim...I have been cleaning the stock carbs for this little girl, and there are quite a few pieces missing...to the point that I have been looking for a full set of carbs to get parts off just to see how this engine runs.
So,...in the mean time, I have purchased several items from Randakk to rebuild these carbs when I thought most of the pieces were there. Looking at what direction I am planning on going, I suddenly came to the conclusion that I don't need to rebuild the stock carbs just to see if she runs.
I had planned on doing the twin Weber carb set up in the begining to get the carbs I'll need for the dual blowers, but currently do not have the $$$ to do the full set up this fall.
At this point, a light went on in my head...way back when I had picked up a single carb kit for the sidecar rig, but never put it on, and the Rig sat unused.
So, I'll use the Randakk carb rebuild kit on the 78, and take this single carb setup to make my 77 run enough to be sure it's sound. Then I'll sell off the single carb set up, cause I've heard they aren't all they are cracked up to be, and go forward with the Weber set up to be able to run the bike next year.

Re: My 77 project that will turn into a supercharged cafe ra
Well, another small update.... Got my Dana S electronic ignition in the mail a few days ago, and was finally able to install it. Happy to say, the bike now has spark!
I also cut up the Vetter, and it is now residing in our trash can, which is on the curb for tomorrow pickup.
Will get the carb setup either tomorrow night, or on Wednesday, so I should have her running by the end of this week.
