Well, I finally got those new throttle cables installed and adjusted. Then I was so gungho I went ahead and moved to the sync of the carbs. Number 2 was almost half a guage out from the other 3 carbs. Lotsa difference once I got them adjusted and dialed in. She is purring like a good girl now. Those vacuum guages were easier to work with than I thought, too.

I guess next I better get those timing belts changed. Probably do that 1st of the week. I will let you know how that goes. What should the next highest priority logically be to address after the timing belts?

I for one, sure do appreciate all the expertise that is so freely shared here on NGW. You guys are fantastic.

I have vetter fairing, hard bags, trunk and original seat that will need recovered but is in excellent condition that I am going to sale if anyone is interested. Later when I get it replaced with a 2 seater, I will have a Corbin single seat for sale as well. Let me know and I can send pics of any item you might be interested in.

thanks again for all the help.

John

That red paint is referred to as "Arrest me Red" in the car hobby...I like it.

Thanks guys...I cant wait to get the belts changed, and then in the next couple weeks I'll be receiving the polished parts from Sunny and get her shined up a little bit more. My plan is, after doing the obvious things to get her road worthy, then enjoying some riding time this summer, to go thru the entire bike replacing everything that can be replaced to make her in 'like new condition'. Along the way, I am looking for another bike and also a sidecar so I can take along my 4 legged friend.

I do have a problem with the side covers in that while I was working on the throttle cables, I knocked the right side cover off the stand it was on, and being the klutz I can be at times, I stepped on it and cracked it. The other side was cracked and repaired before me obtaining it. Unless I can find a good set of undamaged side covers, guess I will be doing some fiberglass repair as well.

Thanks for the compliments on the bike!

John

She looks good, John. What year is it?

When you start riding it regularly, you'll probably get some little leaks. Things like shifter shaft seal, tach cable seal at fuel pump, fork seals ... it seems the old rubber just don't last 35+ years. ;) So, keep 'er clean and inspect for those little drops.

Also, if you haven't already, expect to refresh the coolant system. You'll need some o-rings, radiator cap, thermostat and a thorough flush.

Mine has developed a once-a-day leak at the lower radiator hose housing. Dang, that o-ring is only 31 years old!

Roady the bike is a 78. The exhaust are after market of some kind. I need to check that. I did get the stock mufflers in the deal if I need to go back to them. When I do the timing belts I plan to take the radiator to a shop that has done work for me in the past and have them clean it up for me.

I do have one of those little leaks already coming from the left side valve cover towards the front. It only drips about 3 drips and stops but it isnt consistently leaking either.

I have ordered some parts from SunnBobb and the plan is to redo each component that is located under those shiny new covers before I put the new polished parts on. I cant do it over night but will get 'er done a little at a time.

Thanks for the comments.

John

Now Bert, if you look at the paint hue, this is clearly "Lipstick Red" and the frame color is "High Performance Black"

A little update...not much progress as I had some other things to take care of as of late...one was rigging a fence around the garden to keep those deer out of it...first time in years I've ever been raided by those critters :( . and the oven decided to quit on me. Its been quite a run the last week and a half.

Anyway, I went to town yesterday to get timing belts and they only had one. Ordered the other and it is supposed to be in this morning so I will be taking on that task this afternoon or tomorrow. Of course, using the excellent write up on timing belt changes that we have available. I've read it over about half a dozen times and think I am up to the job.

The little country store down the road from me has quite a collection of items available for us. It's kind of a combo hardware, feed store, grocery store, garage sale operation. They buy lots of going out of business inventory. The gent that handles the hardware was telling me he could offer me a good buy on some motorcycle oil if I could use it so I took a look.

The oil is GN4 Pro Honda 10W-40SJ. I know I need 10W-40 but have no idea what the SJ indicates. The label does show the Honda logo and Honda racing logo as well. Most of the other 10W-40 they had was near $5 per quart or just under. He offered this oil to me for $3.50 so I bought a case. I figured if it was not acceptable for the GW I could always use it in the tractor or mower.

Anyone know what the SJ indicates and is this oil satisfactory for the GW?

Thanks as always and hope everyone has a safe weekend!

John

SJ is what you need for your goldwing. it is designed for wet clutch operation, which your bike has

That is a nice red. And you got a great deal on the oil. Generally it's about $7 (or more) a quart at a dealer.
Since it's running good...how good does it stop?
