Here it is! My first bike, a 79 gl1000! It's a lot bigger than I thought but I still love it! This will be a somewhat slow process since I'm not a millionaire or anything, but it will be a learning experience and a fun time! But here are the pictures from day 1!

Day 1: clean, start stripping, replace plugs, and start randdaks checklist

Picking up my 3 year barn stored bike

Time for a washing! I used simple green and water, seemed to work pretty good!

Now I started to strip off some of the parts that aren't gonna be used, like the windjammer, back pegs, front pegs and bracket, radiator wings, and some other things

An I just this was so cool! Original tools!

These are a couple bikes I found online and I am not sure which direction I'm taking te bike yet but these are some inspiration ideas, and I any of these bikes are owned by forum members please speak up so maybe I could ask some questions!

Welcome to the forum.
If there was a "dirtiest bike" award you'd certainly have been in the running.

We've got a few "minimalist" bikes around here. Ask away. You can certainly see how much the saddle and handlebars affect the look.

A note though...the second and third photos you posted are '78s. The 79's had different Comstar mags and rectangular turn indicators. The frame number is on the sticker on the left side of the steering neck and is also stamped in the right side of the steering neck. If the number starts out with GL1-41xxx then it's a 79. If it's GL1-40xxx it's a 78 (and I'm leaning towards 78). Just make sure the numbers match the title. The engine number is the same format but probably won't match the frame number.

Good progress, better get the brakes working before doing much design work. Never know what that is going to take until to take them apart and give everything a good cleaning. Great start.

You are done, now ride it! Seriously, a seriously DIRTY bike there!...

It looks like you are shooting for a cafe build perhaps, or something minimalistic. The '78 is a good choice, I have one myself.

Good luck with your project, and welcome to NGW...

Holy cow! I read thru it and read thru it, gonna start on everything tomorrow! And I know I shouldn't have but yesterday we put oil and gas in it changed plugs and it started right up! But it wouldn't idle, so I cut it off and tomorrow I start "working" on it! Il keep this updated!

What a great starting point. And she runs!

You're on the right path, can' beat Randakk's advice. There's a helpful list of links for a beginner here too, just click the New2U button in my sig.

Before you fire it up take a look in the air filter housing. Never know where a mouse house or squirrel nut stash might be. Come to think of it that's not bad advice for the exhaust either.

Do you mean the headers, right when they come out of the cylinder head are cold on one side? Is it idling smooth? How about any smoke? Have you revved it at all? If so how does it respond? Sorry more questions than answers right now.

i would say its "smooth".. but then again i dont kno how it is suppose to sound (i do have a video i am going to post)

Casper wrote:

yes it smokes a little but im following "raddnack" (spelling) check list so with the cheap oil im using it will smoke, but only outta the right exhaust

Casper wrote:

yes i have revved it, sounds good and idles back down fine.

now for the crappy part... ok so i pulled the wires from the plugs while it was running here are the results.. pull the right plugs and the bike dies... pull the left plugs and the bike stays running and doesnt change the way its idle'in or anything.. so my left two cylnders are doing nothing. so i checked for spark and i got a tiny tiny spark from all the plugs.

here is the video of the bike idle'in and reving

Image

and here are some random pics i took today just for fun and giggles ha

Image

Image

Image

stripped down the bike a bit more, my friend is gonna come check it out tomorrow, he thinks it may be a ground issue causing the dead cylnders

Image

coil pack, right?

Yes, coil pack. I don't think I've seen a Goldwing idle that low firing on two cylinders. Nice project.
